Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) is a set of unified, free tools that can be used to automate the deployment of Windows client and server installations in enterprise environments. It was originally released in August 2003, and while it has received numerous updates since then, the software has also received many modern and, arguably, better replacements. Now, the Redmond tech giant has finally announced the retirement of MDT.
In a support document, Microsoft has confirmed the "immediate retirement" of MDT, which means that it will no longer receive new features or support from the company. In addition, download packages for the toolkit are being removed from distribution channels. It is important to note that this does not mean that existing deployments will stop working, but since Microsoft will not release compatibility updates for upcoming Windows versions either, it is better for customers to migrate to modern alternatives.
Speaking of alternatives, Microsoft has recommended Windows Autopilot for cloud-based environments and operating system deployment (OSD) in Configuration Manager for on-premises infrastructure.
As such, Microsoft has recommended planning transitioning processes of automated workflows to the aforementioned tools, review existing workflows, evaluate task sequences and Autopilot enrollment options, kick off their migration, and update internal documentation to indicate that MDT has been retired. It is worth noting that Microsoft does not offer a direct in-place upgrade path from MDT to other tools.
The retirement of MDT is not surprising at all, some of its components had already been deprecated. That said, the response to this announcement has been mixed on online platforms like Reddit, where IT admins are discussing the impact of this retirement. Some have also offered archived URLs of download locations for MDT, for those interested. It is difficult to estimate the impact of MDT"s removal, but it"s likely that it"s not being used in most environments given its age and the presence of modern alternatives.
