Microsoft rolls out Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview build 10549, but...

It"s been over a month since Microsoft released its last Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview, build 10536.1004, but today, the long wait for a new build came to an end. Microsoft is now rolling out build 10549 to the Fast ring - but as the company"s Gabe Aul points out, there"s a very important caveat to this release.

As Gabe explains:

We discovered a bug late last night that caused phones upgrading from Build 10536 to get stuck at a black screen after this new build is installed. Rather than making you wait a little bit longer for us to fix this bug – we decided to release this build as a single update from Windows Phone 8.1. Current Insiders that would like to try out Build 10549 should:

That means there"s no direct upgrade path from the previous build to the newest one - so if you currently have Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview build 10536.1004 installed on your device, here"s what you"ll have to do to be able to install 10549:

Go back to Windows 8.1 first using the Windows Device Recovery Tool.
Once you’re on Windows Phone 8.1, install the Windows Insider app, choose the Fast ring, and reboot your phone.
After that – this build should download and install on your phone.

If you don"t want to go through all of that, you can stick with build 10536 for the time being - but you won"t get any of the improvements in the newer build 10549. Microsoft says that for those that stay on 10536, it"s "working to ensure you"ll be able to receive the next one" - let"s just hope it doesn"t take another month to arrive.
