Microsoft's Lumia 435 is now available for £39.99 off-contract

Smartphone prices have fallen to record lows in recent years, bringing increasingly capable devices within reach of those with the most modest budgets. There"s good news now for those on the lookout for an ultra-low-cost handset in the UK, where Microsoft"s entry-level smartphone just became a little more affordable.

The Lumia 435 is currently available for only £29.99 off-contract via the Carphone Warehouse site, with a new pay-as-you-go (PAYG) SIM card. To qualify for that price, you"ll have to buy some PAYG credit from EE - a minimum of £10, which includes 150 minutes of talktime, unlimited texts and 500MB of data, valid for 30 days.

You can also buy the Lumia 435 with PAYG SIMs from Vodafone, O2 and Virgin Media - but if you do so, you"ll have to pay more for the handset. Given that almost every phone sold by Carphone Warehouse is network-unlocked - including most of those sold on PAYG - you may as well go for the cheapest option.

The Lumia 435 has previously been priced as low as £24.99, but with a mandatory £20 top-up, it brought the total up-front cost to £44.99. With an all-in cost of £39.99 for the budget-friendly device, this latest deal on the Lumia 435 might just make it the UK"s most affordable new Windows Phone ever.

The Lumia 435 is available in black, white and orange, along with a green option unique to the retailer.
