The organizers of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) have announced that there will be no Russian pavilion at the event. A "handful" of Russian firms will also be barred from the event due to sanctions imposed on Russia.
In addition to that. MWC"s organizers also made it clear that they have no intentions of canceling or postponing the event that is scheduled between February 28 and March 3 in Barcelona.
John Hoffman, chief executive of event organizer GSMA, told Reuters:
“As we see the situation today, we don’t see any need or requirement to do that. Of course, it’s an evolving situation and we will continue to monitor it.
We are guided by the international sanctions and there are some companies that are identified on the sanction list and those will be barred from participating"
He further added that "a handful, a few" Russian companies, and their executives are going to be barred from the event, without revealing their names.
MWC 2022 is expected to host between 40,000 to 60,000 people during the four days, marking one of the biggest in-person events to be happening after the pandemic. Moreover, Russia"s invasion of Ukraine did not impact hotel cancellations in Barcelona related to the event with the exception of some representatives from eastern Europe.
