Moving all of Newham Borough Councils NT4 workstations, Office programs, and 130 Bespoke applications onto a modern Microsoft platform is cheaper than Linux alternatives claims a new study. This study claims that Newham can save 68% by sticking with Microsoft products, by avoiding the cost of switching to open source solutions. This is according to a recent study performed by Capgemini a professional services firm.
The Capgemini study revealed that staying with Microsoft software is 68% cheaper than open source solutions. In addition Newham Borough Council will save 3.2 million pounds over the next five years simply by upgrading to newer Microsoft products. This deal will also equip social workers with Microsoft Tablet PCs among other things. The odd part about all of this is that Newham is also a member of the OGC (Office of Government Commerce), which promotes the use of Linux.
When you hear about companies/industries saving money it"s usual followed by the word Linux, but this time it"s Microsoft. This can"t come at a better time for the tech giant as its war with Linux continues. No doubt this decision by Newham will influence others to think twice about purchasing/staying with Microsoft products.
