OpenAI expands partnership with Oracle for 4.5 GW of additional data center capacity

Early this year, OpenAI announced its plans to build AI infrastructure in the US on an unprecedented scale. OpenAI, along with SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX, has started a new company called The Stargate Project, which plans to invest $500 billion over the next four years to build new AI infrastructure in the US alone.

Today, OpenAI announced its expanded AI infrastructure partnership with Oracle. As part of this expanded partnership, Oracle and OpenAI will develop 4.5 gigawatts of additional data center capacity.

When combining this new data center capacity with the already announced Stargate I site in Abilene, Texas, OpenAI will have over 5 GW of Stargate AI data center capacity with over 2 million GPUs. OpenAI highlighted that they are expected to exceed their initial AI infrastructure commitment in the US, thanks to the expanding partnership with Oracle, SoftBank, and others.

OpenAI estimates that building, developing, and operating this additional 4.5 GW of data center capacity with Oracle will create over 100,000 jobs across construction and operations roles in the U.S.

Recently, there were reports that OpenAI"s Stargate project is not progressing as per initial plans. OpenAI debunked those reports by claiming that its partnership with SoftBank is moving forward with strong momentum. Along with SoftBank, OpenAI is making site assessments and reimagining how data centers are designed to power advanced AI.

OpenAI also highlighted that Microsoft will continue to provide cloud services for OpenAI, including through Stargate AI infrastructure.

The major expansion of The Stargate Project, highlighted by this new data center partnership with Oracle, marks a swift acceleration in the growth of AI infrastructure across the U.S.
