Responding to the launch of Gemini 3, OpenAI has released GPT-5.2 Instant, Thinking, and Pro, rolling them out to paid plans such as Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise, starting immediately. It is also available immediately to all developers via the API. Accompanying this, Microsoft is immediately bringing GPT-5.2 to Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Copilot Studio, giving customers access to the latest frontier model tuned for work.
The GPT-5.2 series includes Thinking for complex, strategic work; Pro for its smarts and trustworthiness; and Instant for fast, everyday writing and translation. The Instant model will be what users turn to most often for its lower cost and quicker responses.
According to OpenAI, the new model has been designed to be better at creating spreadsheets, building presentations, writing code, perceiving images, and handling complex, multi-step projects. In the benchmarks, the Thinking model beats or ties top industry professionals on 70.9% of comparisons on knowledge work tasks (GDPval), performing the work more than 11 times faster for less than 1% of the cost of experts.
On coding, it scores 55.6% on the SWE-Bench Pro benchmark and 80% on the SWE-Bench Verified. This translates to more reliable production code debugging and feature implementation. Meanwhile, with long context, it achieves near 100% accuracy on a 4-needle long-context reasoning variant (256K tokens), enabling more accurate deep document analysis.
Yesterday, Neowin reported that Attorney Generals from US states had written a letter to OpenAI, Microsoft, and other AI companies with concerns about AI safety. While the new GPT-5.2 won"t address all the concerns, its responses with errors were 30% relatively less common than the previous model, and there are meaningful improvements in handling sensitive conversations such as mental health and self-harm.
Microsoft has also announced that the new model is rolling out now on Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Copilot Studio. In M365 Copilot, you must have a Copilot license, and in Copilot Studio, it is available in early release cycle environments. One of the benefits of using it in M365 Copilot is that GPT-5.2 connects to Work IQ, Microsoft"s intelligence layer that reasons across a user"s work data to unlock strategic insights and market research.
