Patch Tuesday: Here's what's new for Windows 7 and 8.1

Today is the second Tuesday of the month, and that can only mean one thing: it"s Patch Tuesday, the day that Microsoft releases updates for all supported versions of Windows. Along with Windows 10, that includes older versions of the OS as well, like Windows 7 and 8.1.

If you"re on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, you"ll get KB4103718, which is this month"s rollup. You can manually install it here, and it contains the following fixes:

  • Addresses an issue that may cause a memory leak on SMB servers after installing KB4056897 or any other recent monthly update. This leak may occur when the requested path traverses a symbolic link, a mount point, or a directory junction and the registry key is set to 1: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanManServer\Parameters\EnableEcp

  • Addresses an issue that may cause an error when connecting to a Remote Desktop server. For more information, see CredSSP updates for CVE-2018-0886.

  • Security updates to Internet Explorer, Windows apps, Windows kernel, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows storage and filesystems, HTML help, and Windows Hyper-V.

Symptom Workaround
A stop error occurs on computers that don"t support Streaming Single Instructions Multiple Data (SIMD) Extensions 2 (SSE2). Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.


The security-only update is KB4103712, and can be manually downloaded here. It has the same known issue.

Those on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 will get KB4103725, which can be manually downloaded here. Here"s what"s new:

  • Addresses an issue that prevents customers from typing Hangul correctly with Microsoft"s Korean IME in Microsoft Word Online.

  • Addresses an issue that may cause an error when connecting to a Remote Desktop server. For more information, see CredSSP updates for CVE-2018-0886.

  • Security updates to Internet Explorer, Windows apps, Windows kernel, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows storage and filesystems, HTML help, and Windows Hyper-V.

There are no known issues with this update. The security-only update is KB4103715, and you can grab that here. It also doesn"t contain any known issues.

As always, you can get the update designated for your version of Windows by going to the Control Panel and using Windows Update.
