Organic Maps, an open-source alternative to Google Maps, has just received its 2025.11.25 update, bringing quite a number of new features. For anyone who hasn"t used Organic Maps for privacy-focused GPS navigation, when you click on a town or city, it shows a Wikipedia preview about the area. In the latest update, Wikipedia articles for places are now available in Turkish, Japanese, and Chinese. Another new feature in this update is the option to toggle the visual highlight on the map for downloaded regions.
This Google Maps alternative privacy option uses the OpenStreetMap-based maps data and pulls in the latest changes several times a month. This new update to Organic Maps pulls in OpenStreetMap data as of November 23, 2025.
Key updates for iOS users: Editing bookmarks and tracks
The update also brings some iOS-specific updates. There is bookmark and track editing that lets you edit bookmarks and tracks in Organic Maps by tapping the name on the Place Information Page. There is support for iOS 26 and macOS 26"s new Liquid Glass theme. There is a new copy function that lets you long-tap the name or address of a selected place or bookmark to copy it to the clipboard.
Staying with iOS improvements, this update brings list management improvements. You can tap the list name on the Place Information Page and select a new list for a bookmark or track, with new search functionality. Finally, the map layout during navigation on iPad has been fixed, and the Download Maps button color in the dark theme has been corrected.
Stability and search improvements for Android
For Android users, the update has added scrollbars to the Search screen and the Bookmarks and Tracks screen. The update also brings improved handling of audio playback and interruptions. It also brings fixes for crashes on the Editor Profile screen and during map downloads.
General app enhancements and GeoJSON import
Other improvements include:
- Added custom emojis on the Place Information Page.
- Increased road brightness and contrast in dark vehicle mode.
- Bicycle routing now skips one-way living streets in Austria.
- Improved GeoJSON import, including Saved Places.json bookmarks from Google Takeout.
- This makes it easier to import Google Takeout to Organic Maps.
- .json files can also be imported now as .geojson files.
- When you move a track to a list, that list becomes the default for new bookmarks and tracks.
- Updated translations for multiple languages, including a fix for Hebrew.
- Simplified roundabout directions.
The new update is available now via your respective app store. Organic Maps supports car, walking, cycling, and limited transport navigation. Unlike Google Maps, Organic Maps requires you to download maps first so that directions are available even when you do not have an internet connection, ideal if you are going somewhere where there is limited connectivity, making it the perfect offline map app for hiking.
