Samsung is expanding its Color E-paper lineup with the launch of the 13-inch EM13DX model, a paper thin display that features a housing made from phytoplankton a world first according to the Korean tech giant.
Samsung first showcased a range of Color E Paper displays at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2025, where it marketed these low-power displays as modern replacements for paper signs, suitable for menus in cafes, restaurants, and as signage in shopping centers and public venues. The first model officially launched in the lineup was the Color E-Paper EM32DX, a 32-inch display initially available only in Germany before its global release last June.
The newest member of the family, the EM13DX, is a 13-inch display that is about the size of an A4 sheet of paper. Samsung said its advanced color imaging algorithm in this model refines how images are rendered, giving the display a distinct paper-like look and feel.
The screen has a 1,600 by 1,200 resolution with a 4:3 aspect ratio, a rechargeable battery, and USB Type C support for power. At just 17.9mm thick and weighing 0.9kg with the battery, you can just about put this thing anywhere. It also comes with two rear holders, two hanging brackets, and two simple stands.
You can control the display in a couple of ways. The Samsung E Paper App, available for Android and iOS, allows staff to manage what"s on screen using their own devices. For larger operations, the display is compatible with Samsung VXT, a cloud-based platform that lets teams handle hardware settings, troubleshoot problems, and deploy content without needing to be on site.
As mentioned earlier, this model is the first commercial display to apply a bio resin derived from phytoplankton in its housing. Samsung claims this innovation can "reduce carbon emissions in the manufacturing process by more than 40%" compared to using petroleum-based plastics.
Samsung plans to launch the 13-inch model globally today, and will show it alongside a 20-inch model at ISE 2026 in Barcelona from February 3rd to the 6th.
Speaking of hardware getting unveiled at ISE this year, Raspberry Pi will be there showing off its new Smart Display Module, an adapter board for its Compute Module 5 (CM5), designed for professional signage.
