Sony acquires game developer Sucker Punch Productions

A game developer that has been making games exclusively for Sony"s Playstation consoles for a while now is now officially a part of Sony"s developer family. MSNBC.com reports that Sony has acquired Sucker Punch Productions, the Bellevue, Washington based game developer that ironically was founded by former Microsoft team members back in 1997. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sucker Punch is now the 16th internal game developer that"s owned by Sony.

While it released its first game, Rocket: Robot on Wheels, for the Nintendo 64 game console back in 1999, the rest of Sucker Punch"s game titles have been made exclusively for Sony"s Playstation consoles. It began with Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, a platformer game featuring a raccoon thief, for the PS2 in 2002. The developer made two more games in the Sly Cooper series for Sony, again both for the PS2.

When Sony launched the Playstation 3, Sucker Punch took a bold move and decided to dump the cute cartoon animals for a serious and dark open world super hero game. The result was Infamous, which was released in 2009. The game"s sequel, Infamous 2, was released earlier this year. So far there"s no word on what Sucker Punch is working on next. At E3 2011 Sony announced plans for a fourth Sly Cooper game but it will not be made by Sucker Punch. MSNBC.com"s article hinted that other game publishers were interested in acquiring Sucker Punch before the Sony Computer Entertainment deal was finalized.
