Ever since the launch of the hugely well-received Demon"s Souls remake for PlayStation 5, fans have been clamoring about giving the same treatment to other series in Sony"s gaming portfolio. However, it seems the PlayStation maker has other plans, as the developer behind the remake, Bluepoint Games, is now being shut down.
Sony acquired the developer back in 2021, just a year after it released the Demon"s Souls remake. While the studio hasn"t put out any new games since then, it did lend a hand to Santa Monica Studio in the development of God of War Ragnarok.
While never officially confirmed, Sony had reportedly put Bluepoint into developing a live service game for quite a few years. This was said to be a God of War live service experience, which got canceled in early last year alongside another Bend Studios multiplayer title. It"s unclear if that studio is safe from cuts too. Sony said back then that both studios are safe from being shut down despite the project losses.
In an email to employees, PlayStation CEO Hermen Hulst said that despite seeing major success with recent exclusive releases like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yotei, the shutdown is going ahead due to the "challenging industry environment."
"While I know this is hard news to hear, I’m confident in the direction we’re headed. Creativity, innovation, and building unforgettable experiences for players remain at the heart of PlayStation Studios," added Hulst. "We have a robust roadmap for fiscal year 26, with much to look forward to in the months ahead."
The Bluepoint shutdown is affecting around 70 employees from the Austin, Texas-based development studio. Other than the Demon"s Souls remake, its previous work includes Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and the Shadow of the Colossus remake.
