Sony reveals a God of War trilogy remake and shadow drops a prequel game

The State of Play showcase of Sony had a special segment dedicated to the God of War franchise, which is now over two decades old. This turned out to contain two massive announcements, both revealed by TC Carson, the original voice actor behind Kratos in the Greek saga. Fitting the role, the first reveal was for a complete remake of the original trilogy of games that kicked off the franchise.

Unfortunately, the project was said to be "very early in development," so all we got to see was a name reveal as a teaser, which you can catch above. "We ask for your patience as it will be a while before anything else can be shared," said Santa Monica Studio today. "When we can come back with an update, we aim to make it a big one!"

At the same time, fans don"t have to wait long to jump back into this action universe, as Sony surprise released an entirely new God of War game onto the PlayStation 5 today: God of War Sons of Sparta.

Ditching the 3D perspectives of all previous games, this entry is landing as a 2D action platformer. It"s being developed by Mega Cat Studios, the studio behind the Backyard Baseball franchise of sports games.

"From the writing team at Santa Monica Studio that brought you God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, Sons of Sparta is a tale of duty, honor, and brotherhood featuring TC Carson who reprises his role the first time in over a decade as the adult version of Kratos, our story’s narrator," says the developer about the secret project.

The canon story has players following Kratos in his youth alongside his brother Deimos as he goes through the harsh Agoge training in ancient Sparta. Using the classic spear and shield as weapons, young Kratos will be tearing through plenty of 2D enemies in this prequel. There will be some magic involved too, as divine artifacts known as the Gifts of Olympus will be available to enhance his powers of combat.

God of War Sons of Sparta is available for purchase and play now on PlayStation 5 with a $29.99 price tag for the standard edition.
