Cloud Imperium Games has a brand-new update for Star Citizen alpha backers, and this one is offering a bit of a different experience compared to the usual content drops. Outside of a new starship for players, the Alpha 4.6 update"s biggest addition is a medical emergency that"s unfolding in one of its systems, with players receiving fresh mission types that focus on helping the responders.
Dubbed Molina Mold, this fungal outbreak has hit the residents of the recently added Levski settlement in the Nyx system. Landing as a game-wide event, players can band together to help with the relief efforts for various types of rewards.
"A deadly fungal infection known as the "Molina Mold" has been spreading through the station due to faulty air filters, causing a disease called the People"s Ailment with symptoms including coughing, fatigue, chest pain, and bone lesions," says the developer about this mystery illness plaguing the game. "With the death toll rising into double digits and spreading to the Stanton system, the UEE has mobilized contractors to help contain the outbreak."
The studio says that players can now transport medical supplies, defend supply convoys from criminal gangs, deliver antifungal treatments, and gather resources for manufacturing cures, thanks to the various types of missions available from day one of the event.
Spacegoers who continue to complete missions via their mobiGlas will then have the option to go on special Milestone activities. These more difficult missions can only be played once, offering a more narrative-focused scenario than the repeatable activities. This includes delivering critical components, helping find a solution to the mold issue, and defending a piece of valuable cargo from the Moraine gang.
The studio is offering rewards for both individual and community-wide actions to help the situation. This includes new armor, ship tints, weapon skins, and cosmetic rewards for the player character.
At the same time, a brand-new ship has landed for the game. The RSI Hermes is described as a large-capacity, fast-paced, medium freight ship that only needs a small crew to operate, but has plenty of hauling capacity.
