The new icons in build 9926 show Microsoft's efforts for better high-DPI scaling

While looking at the new icons in the January Technical Preview of Windows 10, we found a few that have been designed for screens that support very high resolutions, which confirm our report from last year. This is good news for those who want to use Windows 10 on a device with a very high resolution display.

One of the biggest problems Windows 8 had was poor support for the high-DPI displays that are becoming increasingly common in newer devices. The problem can be a big headache for users from a usability point of view, as the icons can be harder to see or appear distorted.

Build 9926 already has some icons that have been designed with these issues in mind. They have sizes of up to 768 by 768 pixels, or 9 times bigger than the 256 by 256 maximum that previous versions of Windows supported.

Other icons have placeholders, such as these icons from imageres.dll :

This may not seem like a big deal in the present, because many people cannot afford the high-end monitors that have extremely high resolutions, but there"s little doubt that these will become standard in a few years, and Microsoft is making sure that Windows 10 will be ready for them.
