EA brings its game adaption of New Line Cinema"s upcoming film home in 2003.

Electronic Arts officially revealed that the work is well underway on The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, with a tentative release date of fall 2003 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, PC and Game Boy Advance. The game will be based on New Line Cinema"s upcoming film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien"s classic fantasy novel and will let players journey through multiple gameplay paths, take control of the motion picture trilogy"s heroes (Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Sam, and Frodo) and will offer environments modeled after the locations from the upcoming movie. The Return of the King will be presented in a third-person perspective, offering action and adventure elements based in what EA calls "rich, interactive levels". Finally, the game will offer a multiplayer co-op mode that will let players form their own "Fellowship" before embarking on their epic journey through Middle-earth. The Return of the King is being developed by EA"s Redwood Shores Studio, save the Game Boy Advance version which is being developed by Griptonite Games, an Amaze Entertainment Studio. The New Line Cinema film will be released on December 17th.
