The Windows 10 October 2018 Update is now blocked for some Intel PCs due to faulty drivers

The Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) keeps on getting more problematic for Microsoft. It was pulled from rollout four days after release - when some users reported their files being deleted after updating - and was then re-released following a month of almost radio silence. Even after this re-release, the feature update keeps on getting plagued by issues, which resulted in Microsoft blocking the update for several device configurations.

Now, Microsoft has halted the rollout of version 1809 to some PCs sporting Intel processors, although this time the fault appears to lie with the chip manufacturer"s display drivers rather than the Redmond tech giant.

On its dedicated Windows 10 October 2018 webpage, Microsoft has noted that Intel inadvertently released versions 24.20.100.6344 and 24.20.100.6345 of its display drivers, which "accidentally turned on unsupported features in Windows". As detailed by the company, this resulted in the following issue:

After updating to Windows 10, version 1809, audio playback from a monitor or television connected to a PC via HDMI, USB-C, or a DisplayPort may not function correctly on devices with these drivers.

Microsoft has now blocked version 1809 for people running the faulty display drivers, and is working with Intel and OEMs to "expire" these drivers. Windows 10 users affected by the problem have been advised to follow the instructions in this forum thread in order to resolve the issue. The company has not announced when it expects to resume the October 2018 Update for the affected PCs.
