Amidst its uncertain future in the U.S., TikTok has added a slew of new features to the platform over the past few weeks. Features such as support for voice notes and images in DMs, YouTube Music integration for TikTok"s "Add to Music" feature, new Footnotes feature for the community, etc., have recently made their way to the app.
Speaking of its gloomy future in the U.S., President Trump has given TikTok multiple chances to stay alive in the country. The deadline has been extended numerous times, and as per the U.S. Commerce Secretary, President Trump likes TikTok, but it should be owned by a U.S. company.
After multiple extensions, TikTok"s latest deadline was set to expire on September 17. However, it appears that President Trump has something else in mind, and he may give the social media giant another opportunity to stay alive in the U.S.
According to sources close to the matter, President Trump is all set to extend the September 17 deadline that asks TikTok to divest its U.S. assets. The source said (via Reuters);
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer began trade talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and China"s top trade negotiator, Li Chenggang, in Spain on Sunday that will touch on TikTok, but a deal is not expected before September 17.
No talks about TikTok were held during their previous interactions in Geneva, London, and Stockholm. Trump was expected to announce the name of the TikTok buyer in July, but that did not happen. Notably, Microsoft, Oracle, and Perplexity AI were among the potential buyers of the U.S. assets of the app.
Ever since Trump took charge as the U.S. President, he has given multiple lifelines to TikTok. It will be interesting to see how much more time TikTok requires to sell off its assets or do something to stay afloat in the U.S.
