Uber heads to Windows 10 Mobile and PCs with Cortana support; new US users get a free ride

Ride-hailing app Uber first made its way to Windows Phone 8.1 almost eighteen months ago. Now, the company is among the first major multinational brands to launch an app built on Microsoft"s Universal Windows Platform (UWP), allowing it to run not just on Windows 10 Mobile smartphones, but also across Windows 10 PCs and tablets.

You can book an Uber from your Windows 10 device, and the Live Tile on the Start menu will count down to the estimated arrival time of your ride, without you needing to keep opening the app to check. However, if you book from a PC or tablet, you will still need a phone with the app installed to complete the journey.

As Uber"s Yixin Zhu highlighted in a blog post today, the updated app also includes support for Microsoft"s digital assistant, Cortana:

Too busy to request a ride yourself? Just ask Cortana, you can say,“Hey Cortana, get me an UberX to 1 Microsoft Way, Redmond, WA” or any address you need to get to.

Uber is also hoping to tempt those who have never used its service before with an introductory offer in the United States:

All new users on Windows in the US will receive their first ride free, up to $20. Users can redeem this offer by entering “MSFTWIN10” in the “PROMOTIONS” tab within the Uber app prior to the ride.

The Uber app is available to download now via the Windows Store.
