Valve confirms Steam Deck stock issues are due to memory shortages

The hardware-selling side of Valve is going through some harsh times right now. Just as its new Steam Machine and other new arrivals face setbacks, the company has now confirmed that it is having trouble restocking its popular PC gaming handheld, the Steam Deck, in some regions. This comes just weeks after it discontinued the entry-level variant.

Steam users in the US had noticed the Steam Deck OLED being out of stock since last week, with no notice of a returning date. Now, Valve has updated the page with a warning, telling customers that memory and storage issues will cause stock shortages in some regions.

"Steam Deck OLED may be out-of-stock intermittently in some regions due to memory and storage shortages," says the page in a short message.

This joins the message about the LCD being phased out that appeared in December 2025, making only the OLED version available and considerably raising the starting price.

While Valve is a small player in the space, component shortages caused by the growing needs of AI data centers are also hitting console-making giants like Sony and Nintendo. The PlayStation 6"s release year might be being pushed back to later in the decade, and the Switch 2"s price may be going up later this year.

Valve was aiming to announce more information about its three new hardware releases in early 2026. Once again, those plans were delayed due to the ongoing memory crisis, meaning pricing and release dates are still up in the air.

The company now plans to release the console-like Steam Machine for the living room, the Steam Frame virtual reality headset, and the newly updated version of the Steam Controller sometime in the first half of 2026.
