Verizon Wireless reveals Q4 2012 figures, but no specifics on Windows Phone

Verizon Wireless is the first of the three major US wireless carriers currently offering Windows Phone 8 handsets to reveal its earnings for the fourth quarter of 2012. The company announced a significant overall loss of $4.22 billion for the quarter and blamed much of that loss on the effects of Hurricane Sandy, which hit the highly populated eastern seaboard of the US in late October.

CNET reports that, in a conference call with analysts, Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo said that Verizon activated 6.2 million iPhones. It also activated an additional 3.6 million smartphones during the quarter but Shammo said the vast majority of those devices were Android-based. Unfortunately, the report didn"t offer any specific information on how many Windows Phone products the company sold in the last three months of the year.

Verizon currently sells two Windows Phone 8 products, the Nokia Lumia 822 and the HTC Windows Phone 8X. It is supposed to start selling the Samsung ATIV Odyssey in the very near future but has not yet announced an official launch date.

Verizon has not promoted its Windows Phone lineup nearly as much as AT&T, which went all-out in the fall with a massive marketing campaign to promote the Nokia Lumia 920. AT&T is scheduled to announce its own Q4 2012 financial numbers on Thursday.
