Vine not shutting down, transitioning to 'Vine Camera'

Back in October, it was reported that Twitter-owned social website Vine is being shut down, with its mobile apps being killed off in the near future. It was also rumored that rather than withering away, it could even be sold by Twitter - in fact, adult website Pornhub even made an offer to purchase the service and "restore it to its NSFW glory".

But now it appears that Vine isn"t killing off its mobile apps after all, but is instead transitioning them to "Vine Camera".

In a post on Medium, the company explained how it has been working closely with content creators to try and figure out the optimal method for this transition to take place. The result is the "Vine Camera" app that will be replacing the current Vine app in January 2017. Vine states that the app will allow users to create 6.5 seconds looping videos that can be posted on Twitter or to their device"s camera roll.

However, the company clarifies that you won"t be able to do anything besides this, and all other features that are available in the current Vine app won"t be making their way to Vine Camera. Similarly, if you don"t update to the pared-down Vine Camera, you won"t be able to download Vines from the outdated app.

Vine states that if you link your account with Twitter, you"ll be able to potentially grow your audience. Followers will be able to view your content on Twitter.

The company also mentions that you can currently download your vines from the app, but if you visit the vine.co website, you"ll also be able to download the captions and comments in a .html file.

That said, Vine has cautioned that its website will soon be transformed into an archive of Vines that were made through the current application. The company will notify users of any changes.
