VLC for Windows 8 passes Microsoft's certification; still no release date

We have been waiting for the VideoLAN team to release the first version of VLC for Windows 8 for well over a year since the end of their Kickstarter fund raising campaign. This week, one of the last hurdles before publication was met as the media player app passed Microsoft"s certification for posting in their Windows Store.

VideoLAN President Jean-Baptiste Kempf emailed Neowin with the news on Wednesday, and the VLC for Windows 8 page on Kickstarter also informed their backers of the news as well (the news is closed to non-backers). However, the app isn"t quite ready to go live just yet. Kempf told Neowin there are "a couple of small fixes, notably on visual bugs" that still need to be corrected.

Because of this, Kempf said he didn"t want to give a release date for the VLC app just yet, and we don"t blame him. There has been times in the past year that the app seemed to be close to completion that turned out to be a tad optimistic. However, this time it really does feel that the Windows 8 VLC 8 is truly getting close to a public launch. Naturally, we will post an update when that happens.
