Windows 10 build 17672 now available in the Fast ring - here's what's new

If you"re a Windows Insider on the Fast ring, it"s once again time to check for updates. Today, the team released Windows 10 Insider Preview build 17672. The build is from the Redstone 5 development branch, so it"s a preview for the next feature update for the OS that"s due out this fall.

The last build, which was released during the company"s Build 2018 developer conference, was the "big bang" release, introducing a wide range of exciting new features that were announced in Seattle. Build 17672 only has one new feature, which has to do with Windows security:

Windows Security Improvements

The Windows Security Center (WSC) service now requires antivirus products to run as a protected process to register. Products that have not yet implemented this will not appear in the Windows Security UI, and Windows Defender Antivirus will remain enabled side-by-side with these products.

For testing purposes, you can disable this new behavior in Windows Insider builds by creating the following registry key and rebooting the device. This key will be removed as we get closer to release.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\Feature
DisableAvCheck (DWORD) = 1

In the blog post, Microsoft"s Dona Sarkar also highlighted some of the events from Build. Three passionate Windows Insiders were brought to the conference, and presented onstage with the team "because of their impactful work using technologies in their local communities."

While today"s build didn"t contain much in the way of new features, there"s still more that we"re expecting from Redstone 5 before it"s released this fall. Your Phone is a highly anticipated feature that links your phone to your PC, and that should show up in the coming weeks.
