Xbox 360 tops US console sales once again in February

Microsoft can once again lay claim to having the the most popular game console in the US. The official Microsoft blog site states that the Xbox 360 console sold 426,000 units in February 2012, according to data from the NPD Group. The Xbox 360 has been the best selling console in the US for the past 14 months.

The overall revenue numbers for the Xbox 360 console in February (including hardware, games and accessories) in the US came in at $383 million.

It was not very good news for the game industry as a whole, at least in terms of retail store sales. Gamesindustry International reports that overall, retail game sales totaled $1.06 billion in February, down 20 percent from the same time period a year ago.

The numbers do not take into account revenues from downloadable games, subscriptions or microtransations. However, the NPD Group estimates that an additional $550 million to $600 million in revenues were generated by those sources as well as others.

According to Gamasutra, the number one best selling game in February was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The fantasy RPG game Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning had a strong debut for a new IP, coming in at number four for February.
