There are a lot of search engines on the internet, when you stop and think about it. Quality is one measure of success, but so is popularity. Moscow-based Yandex is king in Russia but barely a drop in the ocean worldwide. It holds more than 60 percent of that country"s search and has also been available in Turkey since September 2011.
A presence in Turkey doesn"t mean it"s doing well, however. Izvestia reported Yandex has a market share of 0.5 percent, which is a far cry from the 60 percent held in its home country. Using Microsoft"s Windows Phone 8 platform, the Russian company wants to gain more share both at home and in Turkey.
In Turkey and Russia, Yandex is now WP8"s stock search engine; Microsoft"s Bing has little presence in these territories. This could be a beneficial partnership, for early in 2012 WP7 was outstripping iOS sales within Russia. With the release of the iPhone 5 and the stagnation of WP7 as a platform, however, there may be a course change.
News on sales in Turkey isn"t as easily found, but if Yandex and Microsoft have come to a deal here, then it must be one which benefits both companies. WP8 should be hitting Turkey before the end of the month; Nokia"s Lumia 820 & 920 and HTC"s 8X handsets are the three launch phones.
