ZTE announce Windows Phone 7 based "Tania" handset

Chinese-based smartphone maker ZTE has joined the increasingly large list of Windows Phone 7 partners who are planning to release a brand new device based on Microsoft’s upcoming Mango operating system.

According to Engadget, ZTE’s first Windows Phone device is named Tania and was originally shown to the public at the China International Communications Exhibition 2011.

What is known about the Tania device is that it will feature a single core 1GHz processor, a 4.3-inch WVGA display, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage and a five-megapixel camera along with an LED based flash. All other features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS are all there too. The article does point out what the Tania device will not ship with: a front-facing camera, one of the main new features of Windows Phone Mango.

Having a lower specced device like the ZTE Tania could be good news for Microsoft as they attempt to gain ground on Google"s Android operating system, which has eaten away at Microsoft’s Windows Mobile market share over the past few years. Google devices have ranged from high-end expensive smartphones, to low price, less powerful phones, which despite less speed have sold very well.
