Changing colors in Windows 10 title bars

Recommended Posts

I am very tempted to upgrade to Windows 10 though I typically wait a year before updating.

I put on WIndows 10 enterprise on a VM in Hyper-V but I have to say I am disappointed. I can't tell the foreground and background Widows as no color exist. I am partially color blind so maybe there is a color you guys can see that I can't? Besides a very slight color tint border I it all seems white on the top of each application which is driving me crazy!

Is there a way to edit this? It seems Windows 7 aero was the height of customization as 8.1 removed some features. Now no color at all except the title bar unless the setting is missing but I have been looking.

There are several ways. Easiest would be to use WinAero Tweaker which is freeware, which utilizes method 1 as outlined below.

Method 1 involves editing a theme file to point to a renamed Aero.msstyles file.

Method 2 involves editing uDWM.dll in a hex editor, searching for "aero.msstyles" as a unicode string, and changing aero to orea, or any other 4 letters.

WinAero does method 1 for you.

Another option to consider is using third party themes, which DeviantArt has a Windows 10 section: http://www.deviantart.com/browse/all/customization/skins/windows/win10/

There are a few decent themes there compatible with 10240.

You must install this to be able to use custom themes: https://github.com/riverar/uxstyle/releases

I can distinguish the foreground Windows based on:

A) The color of the text in the titlebar (either black if active, grey if not but might be hard to see for you)

B) the color of the titlebar being equal to my theme in some applications (I suspect this will become the default in time but it needs to implemented by the app dev)

C) The color of the icon in the taskbar (easiest to see, but forces you to look down)

Hopefully option B will become the default, but this was a last minute addition so not even all of Microsoft's own apps have it.
