New System, Socket 940 or 939

I'm Starting to put together a new system to replace my current workstation, as such, it will be a daul cpu system. I haven't been able to keep up with the cpu market as much as I used to but I do know that AMD has introduced the new socket 939 line. Alright now my question. Is the 939 line only for the single cpu market? And where does that leave the 940 line? Are they going to continue to make and advance the 940 line or is it done for?

Just need to know. I don't want to sink a bunch of money into the 940 line if it's being discontinued.

940 is going to be used on opteron server chips, stick with 939

the 939 socket is for the Athlon64 and Athlon 64 FX. if you want to build a dual proc system, you'll have to buy a socket 940 and two Opteron 240 series, processors.

Latest S939 (single CPU only) supports dual channel unbuffered memory = much hihger bandwith and much, much cheaper than S940 which only supports single channel memory and buffered memory but dual CPU = very expensive.

In my opinion, if you look at da price difference and from the look from the above equation, I guess S940 (opteron) will only be for running servers only or very highend workstation = very expensive?

actually, socket 939 DOES support Dual CPU, quad CPU and even 8 CPUs.

but if you want to go with dual CPU make sure that you get an Opteron. if you want FX 53, get an Opteron 248, it will work by itself in any Socket 939 board, and if you ever wanna upgrade, you just buy another 248, pop it in a dual CPU board, and your off

Pray tell how you can put a socket 940 opteron in a 939 motherboard then.

Socket 939 is Athlon64/FX, NOT Opteron, 64 and FX dont support dual or quad.

The only way to dual is 940 with opterons.
