Portable Applications for USB Thumbdrive

However, I am wondering what else to include that would be useful and directly executable (without installing anything on the person's computer that I am visiting).

Here's my list so far:

I have a few installable but not executable applications as well (like more XP PowerToys and Ultr@VNC Server).

Any other essential utilities/applications that I am missing (beyond what is listed here and/or here)?

I guess I should choose a CD Burning application for the USB drive. Which is the best of these? (I've never heard of any of them):

I do my web editing live on the net without the use of a local web server. I make a backup before I do any serior work just in case. It hasn't hurt me yet.

All of my domain emails are forwarded to GMAIL (I move around a lot so it helps make it accessible). I can pretty much assume to have internet access wherever I go.

Otherwise, good ideas.

Portable Apps Collection

Requirements

1. 512MB USB Flash drive (You can delete files to make it fit on a smaller drive)

2. Windows (All of these program need Windows)

3. WinXP Service Pack 2 (For the Autorun feature to work)

4. Admin Rights (For TrueCrypt functionality)

5. If you already have TrueCrypt installed on your system, it must be version 4.1.

Initial Setup

Warning: Backup your current USB drive!

1. Delete everything from your current USB drive.

2. Extract USBApps.zip to your USB drive.

3. Explore your USB drive.

4. Setup an encrypted partition to secure sensitive files.

1. Double click on TrueCrypt.

2. Click "Create Volume" button to start TrueCrypt Volume Creation Wizard.

3. Click "Next" at the first screen (this will create a standard TrueCrypt volume).

4. In Volume Location, type "X:\files.tc" Where X: is the volume letter for your thumbdrive and then click Next. (i.e. If your thumbdrive is mounted as the G: drive, type G:\files.tc)

5. Select your Encryption Options and then click Next. (If you don't know what to do, just accept the defaults)

6. Input a Volume Size. This has to be smaller than the remaing free space on your thumbdrive.

7. Select a Volume Password. (Make sure it is a STRONG password that you won't forget)

8. On the Volume Format screen, leave the defaults and select Format.

9. When it is done, it will tell you. Just click OK and then Exit.

5. Create a folder on your C: drive called USBBackup (if you want to use the backup feature).

Usage

If you have Windows XP Service Pack 2, when you insert your drive into a USB port, it will prompt you for a password. This password is the one you specified when you created the TrueCrypt volume during the initial setup. If you enter the password correctly, it will mount your encrypted volume as the Q: drive. (Make sure you dismount the volume before you unplug your drive)

To access the advanced features of this flash drive setup, right click on the drive in the the My Computer window.

o TrueCrypt Mount - This will attempt to mount the encrypted volume you created as the Q: drive. This is included in case Autorun is turned off or you don't have WinXP SP2.

o TrueCrypt Backup - This will backup your Q: drive (if you have it mounted) to C:\USBBackup.

o TrueCrypt Dismount All - This will dismount any and all encrypted volumes.

o TrueCrypt Start - If you want to manually mount or dismount encrypted volumes.

o PStart - Launches PStart (see below)

o Explore - If you want to browse the contents of your flash drive.

Extra Security

If you want to be a little more cautios, you can run some of the apps from the encrypted partition you created. This will allow you to store favorites and profile settings in the encrypted files.tc you created above. To do this follow these steps:

1. Make sure your files.tc has been mounted to the Q: drive. If it isn't, right click on your flash drive in Explorer and select TrueCrypt Mount and mount the partition.

2. Make sure PStart is not running.

3. Move the folder called PortableApps from the root of your flash drive to the Q: drive.

4. Rename PStart.xml to PStartBackup.xml.

5. Rename PStartSecure.xml to PStart.xml.

6. Now when you want to launch the portable versions of Firefox, Gaim, Opera, OpenOffice, FileZilla, Thunderbird, Sunbird, AbiWord or NVU, you must have your encrypted Q: drive mounted.

PStart is a great little application that makes it easy to launch all of these apps from your USB drive. Once you start PStart you can access it via a popup from its systray icon. It functions as a second start menu just for your USB apps. You can also save short notes on the Notes tab. The PStart included with the USB apps I have assembled is already configured to launch most of the apps.

something like a portable version of winzip/winrar maybe?

Doh. I forgot WinRAR. Apparently if you install it on your computer you can then drag a copy of your WinRAR folder to your USB drive and it'll run as a portable app just fine.

First, let me just say that I am glad Nxqd3051990 posted this because it is great ... BUT, the original writers/creators might like the credit .... TheInfoBox. You can download the file from there as opposed to Rapidshare. Also all the information contained in Nxqd3051990's post is on the website and the readme included in the download.

So before you "elect" him to write a tutorial, you may want to get the permission of the original owners.

Again, I am not bashing Nxqd3051990 for the post ... but credit for the work is due to the place where it was gotten.

Portable Apps Collection

1. 512MB USB Flash drive (You can delete files to make it fit on a smaller drive)

2. Windows (All of these program need Windows)

3. WinXP Service Pack 2 (For the Autorun feature to work)

4. Admin Rights (For TrueCrypt functionality)

5. If you already have TrueCrypt installed on your system, it must be version 4.1.

Initial Setup

Warning: Backup your current USB drive!

1. Delete everything from your current USB drive.

2. Extract USBApps.zip to your USB drive.

3. Explore your USB drive.

4. Setup an encrypted partition to secure sensitive files.

1. Double click on TrueCrypt.

2. Click "Create Volume" button to start TrueCrypt Volume Creation Wizard.

3. Click "Next" at the first screen (this will create a standard TrueCrypt volume).

4. In Volume Location, type "X:\files.tc" Where X: is the volume letter for your thumbdrive and then click Next. (i.e. If your thumbdrive is mounted as the G: drive, type G:\files.tc)

5. Select your Encryption Options and then click Next. (If you don't know what to do, just accept the defaults)

6. Input a Volume Size. This has to be smaller than the remaing free space on your thumbdrive.

7. Select a Volume Password. (Make sure it is a STRONG password that you won't forget)

8. On the Volume Format screen, leave the defaults and select Format.

9. When it is done, it will tell you. Just click OK and then Exit.

5. Create a folder on your C: drive called USBBackup (if you want to use the backup feature).

Usage

If you have Windows XP Service Pack 2, when you insert your drive into a USB port, it will prompt you for a password. This password is the one you specified when you created the TrueCrypt volume during the initial setup. If you enter the password correctly, it will mount your encrypted volume as the Q: drive. (Make sure you dismount the volume before you unplug your drive)

To access the advanced features of this flash drive setup, right click on the drive in the the My Computer window.

o TrueCrypt Mount - This will attempt to mount the encrypted volume you created as the Q: drive. This is included in case Autorun is turned off or you don't have WinXP SP2.

o TrueCrypt Backup - This will backup your Q: drive (if you have it mounted) to C:\USBBackup.

o TrueCrypt Dismount All - This will dismount any and all encrypted volumes.

o TrueCrypt Start - If you want to manually mount or dismount encrypted volumes.

o PStart - Launches PStart (see below)

o Explore - If you want to browse the contents of your flash drive.

Extra Security

If you want to be a little more cautios, you can run some of the apps from the encrypted partition you created. This will allow you to store favorites and profile settings in the encrypted files.tc you created above. To do this follow these steps:

1. Make sure your files.tc has been mounted to the Q: drive. If it isn't, right click on your flash drive in Explorer and select TrueCrypt Mount and mount the partition.

2. Make sure PStart is not running.

3. Move the folder called PortableApps from the root of your flash drive to the Q: drive.

4. Rename PStart.xml to PStartBackup.xml.

5. Rename PStartSecure.xml to PStart.xml.

6. Now when you want to launch the portable versions of Firefox, Gaim, Opera, OpenOffice, FileZilla, Thunderbird, Sunbird, AbiWord or NVU, you must have your encrypted Q: drive mounted.
