Serif Page Plus SE

Recommended Posts

I've been using Serif Page Plus for more than ten years. I use it for my personal correspondence, business cards, books, booklets, calendars, PDF files, brochures, CD covers, tickets, and posters. If I have any word-processing task that needs more power than simple text editing (I used Jarte to write this review), or any page layout task, then Page Plus is my first choice.

Page Plus SE is basically PP9, less some key features like PDF Output and a Web Publishing mode. Because it is freeware, it also lacks a few graphic filters like PCX, which require a license fee to be incorporated into any Software package. PNG, JPG, WMF, EMF, BMP, GIF, and TIF, are all supported.

The Free Serif Software Website is beautifully laid out, so for the details I can do little better than point you to Serif's own descriptions of what their software can do.

Why Use PagePlus SE?

DTP vs Word Processing

This software is totally free. You can use it as long as you like without upgrading. To download it, you must register your email address, and Serif will send you promotional emails offering discounted upgrades of Page Plus and other Serif products until you unsubscribe.

Why do they give away such good software for nothing? Because once you have used it, and seen what it can do, you may realise that the price of the upgrade to the full package is fantastic value for money, whether you compare it to MS Publisher, GST Pressworks, or to PageMaker, InDesign, and Quark Express. For years, only Page Plus 5 was available. This out of date package was OK if you took the trouble to learn how to use it, but Page Plus SE is last year's flagship product (almost). I pestered Serif for months? to get them to upgrade their free offerings. They finally agreed that it made good marketing sense, and launched the updates last month on Valentine's Day.

For free software, this is about as good as it gets. Only Opera or Irfan View would get my vote for being better designed free products than Page Plus. Open Office is amazing too, but who needs to spend weeks learning how to use it properly, when you can pick up Page Plus and start creative and useful work today?

? In fact, I first suggested this on 3/26/2004.

Page Plus SE Patch

I'm not sure if the download has been updated. It probably has been by now. If you find that it crashes when trying to import PNG files, download this DLL update from this post on the Serif forum and put in your PagePlus SE\1.0\Program folder.

Another small difference between Page Plus SE and Page Plus 9 is the lack of support from Drop Capitals (Paragraph Leaders). You can work around this by creating the leader as a separate Artistic text, and wrapping the paragraph text around it.

I wonder how Apple's new Pages fairs in comparision? disregarding the obvious fact that it runs on OS X and not XP.

Difficult to compare the two products at all. Page Plus SE is free and runs on Windows; iWorks is $79 and runs on Macs. We could compare iWorks to the retail version of PP9, which should be available for a lot less if you can find it.

PP10 is a more powerful product with a lot of new features such as Unicode support, footnotes, etc., but is more expensive at $130 for the full product.

iWorks has some features that PP9 doesn't, like charts and movies. PP9 has PDF output, which iWorks seems to lack.

Some users have asked for a port of Page Plus to Linux or the Mac, but I don't see it happening any time soon. The market for foreign language versions would probably be greater.

I just discovered this product today. Its a great replacement for Publisher.

Can any other programs read its filetype?

I only just read your post after looking at my old reviews.

No. Most DTP programs cannot read other DTP formats, only word-processor formats. To transfer stuff you have to use the Windows Clipboard, or export stories in Rich Text Format and save images to disk.

Serif Page Plus SE is still the same as when I first reviewed it. PP9 is now only ?10, PP10 is only ?20, and PP11 is only ?50. The latest version is PagePlus X2 for about ?100. PP11 and PPX2 can open PDF files, which does give you a way of transfering files from other DTP programs, but be warned that the results are rarely perfect, and sometimes pretty much unusable. I found that PDF files from Open Office were about the most useful when opened in PagePlus X2.

See my Review of PPX2 and comparison of features in the different versions.

I use their stuff because it is good value for money. They never phone me 'cos I wasn't daft enough to give them my phone number. Here in the UK, we have something called the Telephone Preference Service. If you register your number with them you can avoid most sales calls. If you visit your account on the Serif website you can unsubscribe from email newsletters.

I know that lots of people get really uptight about direct sales, and I do too. I just shut the door in the face of any sales person who ignores the NO SALES sign on my door-bell, or just say "No thanks" and put the phone down if I do get a sales call. However, there are ways to avoid the hassle, and if you cannot figure out how to make them stop, then not using their free (or cheap) software won't stop the hassle either.

I had that issue-- when I ran XP and custom themes--- Switch to classic theme then run the installer-- Usually there is another option below that. Since in your picture the box is cut off that is what could be the issue. (Usually there is a no thanks button or later button. If it is not that-- you must have something like NIS or Script blocker or antivirus installed that blocks script -- or possibly AOL.

Red,

Thanks for the suggestions. I did switch to Classic Theme, and I do have AntiVirus/Firewall sofware installed (Avast! / Online Armor respectively). I disabled both, and I disabled pop-up blocker in the IE Google Toolbar, and in the Security settings for the Internet zone. When I dragged to highlight the bottom text in the Registration box I got:

Once registered, you will qualify for:

World class technical support and assistance

Serif upgrade offers

Special deals on other products

If you experience any problems with the online registration process, please click here.

Product installation number:

There is nothing after the bottom line there, and neither the button to register, nor the click 'here' link does anything. I have IE6 on Windows XP SP3 for a browser. I do not use AOL at all. Any other ideas you might have would be appreciated. I get the same results in PhotoPlus and DrawPlus.

Hi Jeff,

Maybe it is time to upgrade to IE7 (you can use windows update) as it is not really a good idea to still run IE6.

Good luck.

Eric

I can click the Register button until the cows come home and it does not work.

It seems to be problem caused by large fonts. If you click on the registration dialogue you should be able to scroll down with the mouse to read the rest of the dialogue. I don't remember, but you may have to fill in your email address in order to register the program.

I tried to reply this before but it didn't come up so here goes:

There is no scrollbar on that window you refer to so with the larger fonts you can't get to the line which contains the installation number (which you need to send in to get your activation code number.

Try right clicking on your desktop and choosing 'properties.' Then go to settings>advanced or whatever and change your font size to small. If necessary you can also change the screen resolution to a higher res.

You may have to reboot for the changes to take effect but after that you should be able to see the whole page, enter the code you will have gotten from Serif after you sent them the intallation number, and press the button on the bottom line which says 'Finish.' And you're finished!

PS I just downloaded it and already like it much better than Publisher. Isn't it ironic that the biggest software company in the world makes some of the flakiest, most annoying software out there?

    • The only reason I want to know where you from is because if you are not from the U.K, then why should you care what we in the U.K do or don't do? Racist I am not, I am fed up with the amount coming over here and feel they can come over here and think we need to support them. Do you know how much it costs this country to support these people coming over here? Even when we give them a place to live it is not good enough. We had a barge that was being used to house immigrants, oh but that was not good enough. A mate said to me at the time, when he was homeless, he would have been happy to live on the barge, instead of ending up sleeping on a bench on the beach. I am not scared to say what my family heritage is, unlike you who is scared to say where they are from or where they live. Father side U.S, mother side Wales, still have family living in the U.S. A mate who sadly died a few years ago, had a load of people from different races recording in his studio, I got on with all of them. Skin colour don't bother me, where they are from don't bother me. Religion don't bother me as long as they don't push it onto me and it is not crazy stuff. I am not religious. But if you are not living in the U.K, then why should you care if we are in the E.U or not? This the problem, too many people poking their noses into where it don't belong. But you believe what you believe, if you think I am racist, then be it, I really do not care. Just grow a pair

    • Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5102558, KB5095615 Setup and Recovery updates by Sayan Sen This past week Microsoft released the newest preview update (C-release) under KB5095093. Alongside those, Microsoft also released new dynamic updates. For those who may not know, dynamic updates bring improvements to the Windows Recovery process in the form of Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates, which are also called Safe OS updates. The dynamic updates also affect the Setup file binaries in the form of Setup updates. These Dynamic Update packages are meant to be applied to existing Windows images prior to their deployment. Dynamic Updates also help preserve Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content during the upgrade process. VBScript, for example, is currently an FOD on Windows 11 24H2. This time both recovery and setup updates were released for Windows 11. The company writes: "KB5095186: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, version 26H1: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should be 10.0.28000.2335. KB5102558: Setup Dynamic Update for Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to Windows setup binaries or any files that setup uses for feature updates in Windows 11, version 24H2 and Windows 11, version 25H2. KB5095615: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should be 10.0.26100.8737." Microsoft notes that both the Recovery and Setup updates will be downloaded and installed automatically via the Windows Update channel.
    • The high cost of labor and operating within the US. Donald hasn't been able to figure that out--pathetic.
