Hi All

Friends and Family are asking me a lot if they should switch antivirus programs, after I recommended MSE or WIndows Defender For the Ones Running Windows 8, they also heard from another family member that MSE Failed the latest Av-Test with a Protection score of 1.5 out of 6.0. So basically what I was wondering from folks here if it's still wise to recommend Microsoft Security Essentials to Non Computer Savy Relatives and other Friends

Thanks in Advance all

Yeah aware of Avast ads, used it for a bit a while back, am liking MSE and WIndows Defender lately on Windows 8 system, just making sure I make the right recommendation to Family now, as who knows what they click on or install half the time, though been lucky haven't found any serious infections in over a year now, So that is one good thing for sure.

Advice for non-savvy family members (better if you do this for them)

1. Create two accounts one non-admin "standard" for regular use and one "admin" for installation etc.

2. Set the non-admin as default account and tell them if they get prompted for admin account, they are doing something wrong.

3. MSE/Windows Defenders are good for most normal people

In the end, no matter what AV you ask them to use - they will end up ****ing the computer anyway. The AV test scores don't take user stupidity into account.

You see, for most of the people on this site, MSE will suffice. That is because most of us are not stupid enough on clicking everything we see and opening everything we get.

The main advantage of MSE is that it's the lightest Anti-virus out there, so anything else will bog down the system (even if it's a little).

Already Did Setup Non-Admin Standard user account on Vista and Windows 7 and 8 Systems for Family, Reloaded fresh Vista Machine, Windows 7 Machine, and 8 upgraded fairly new PC last month, so far not much yelling this popped up for Password or anything. So far monthly full scans been clean...

So Far So Good it looks like so far

In Additon have XP Sp3 Laptop setup with Standard user accounts, and 1 Admin Account--password protected on all them. So I think i'm pretty well set with Family Setup it looks like now

I recommend just using the built-in protection in Windows 8. However I also recommend users consider enabling Enhanced Protected Mode if you use desktop IE (it's always on for the immersive version).

Thanks Everyone for the Replies, even I learned something useful on WIndows 8 Desktop version of Internet Explorer, Didn't even realize Desktop Version had Enchanced Protected Mode....Appreciate all the Good Info, and Everything

    • Ridiculous claim that the labor cost difference of $6000 annually would increase cost per phone by $200. The employees produce 3 phones per month or what?
