Scorbing
Source: http://www.linuxmint.com/ The team is proud to announce the release of Linux Mint 13 ?Maya?. Available in two editions, Linux Mint 13 features the choice between a productive, stable and mature MATE 1.2 desktop and the brand new modern-looking and exciting Cinnamon 1.4. These two desktops are among the best available, they?re perfectly integrated within Linux Mint and represent great alternatives to Gnome 2 users. Linux Mint 13 is also an LTS (Long Term Support) release and it will be supported until April 2017. One thing I noticed on this new version is they went back to the original Gnome look from 2 versions ago. No more Gnome 3 shell. Very strange that they would do that. I guess the Gnome 3 shell didn't quite work as well as they wanted. I do find this version of Linux Mint quite fast. The OS is more responsive and leaner. Glassed Silver
I see they went back to 2003 and incorporated parts of Apple's Brushed metal interface. Exactly what I was thinking. :p Not necessarily bad, but the start menu looks too odd with metal tacked on. George P Global Moderator Posted May 30, 2012 Global Moderator Share Posted May 30, 2012 Gnome3 shell is the only Gnome i've liked so far. I'd still rather pick Ubuntu or Fedora over this from what I've seen. .Neo
I always despised the Brushed metal look. Really glad Apple got completely rid of it in 2007. oliver182 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1080519-linux-mint-13-maya-released/#findComment-594896817 Share on other sites
Wakers
Still a no go for me. Tried Ubuntu and Mint in the last week, both failed utterly. My wireless adapter simply baffles both operating systems - and ndiswrapper always either crashes or causes a kernel panic and whatever the linux alternative of blue screen is. Ubuntu is actually very funny - if you don't have an internet connection, you can't install .deb packages (that you already have on your computer) through the software center. How great is that? It's a bit rubbish by the Ubuntu based distros though, as this issue has been around for years now. oliver182 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1080519-linux-mint-13-maya-released/#findComment-594896825 Share on other sites

simplezz
Netgear WNA3100. Apparently, you need ndiswrapper 1.57 or later to get it working. Here's a wiki if it helps. tsupersonic
dat brushed metal! It looks hideous... Having said that, I remember Mint being a cool distro. back in the day. Maybe I'll give this a go, as the new Ubuntu is slow as hell on my netbook - to a point it's not usable at all. Tried that, trust me, I spent 6 hours messing around yesterday. Got the correct drivers, ndiswrapper 1.57 and when trying to install the driver, it just stops responding. I've been through about 5 different step by steps of varying complexity and nothing worked for me. Knife Party
Well at least there they ripped-off Apple's current menu design. also @ Jub -> ripped off OSX designs ? the brushed metal for menu in MATE edition which you commented on, is only so because its inherent specifically to one - yes the Metal X GTK3 theme, not so system across in the whole of Mint. Other themes change the look, so no that's not linux in a nutshell. Also what's with the constant hate, its always this and that sucks compared to OSX, they are doing this wrong, OSX does it so much better...blah blah blah, do us all a favour and actually comment on the distribution before you come here and type rubbish because you like stroking your annoying OSX/fanboy ego. Linux Mint is a great product all flaws aside, it is what it is, Cinnamon 32bit has been a fun experience so far, it's fast, Cinnamon manager is a nice consolidated collection of top gnome shell tweaks or for cinnamon, so that's nice to have. Also, fire up Xfire, the 1st thing it does is automatically load up 2 channels, Mint Support and Mint Chat - boom, install help and general chit chat - what other OS has that by default? Its got some nice Compiz effects and tweaks, its light, cinnamon website has an organised collection of themes, applets, extensions, gtk3 themes etc ( which is really nice!). Coming from Mint 12 Gnome Shell, things have been great, its runs much better than Unity for me which was one of the best aspects; so progressing onto Mint 13 CInnamon has been a nice new experience, kudos to the mint team, hoping to try MATE soon :D recursive 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1080519-linux-mint-13-maya-released/#findComment-594896919 Share on other sites

Max Norris
I see they went back to 2003 and incorporated parts of Apple's Brushed metal interface. Indeed.. ew. Wasn't a fan of the brush metal look, even when it was something new. But at least it's a quick thing to change to something easier on the eyes.. the default doesn't help much as a selling point though. I've been playing around with the MATE version for a day, and I like it :D Agreed.. I'm not much of a GNOME fan since version 3.. (actually, I sit squarely in the "WTF were they thinking" category), but this seems to be a nice alternative to those that preferred GNOME 2, at least from my brief messing around with this distro in a virtual machine. May have to give DE this a go on my Arch installation. Usually just use AwesomeWM as my desktop usage under Linux is pretty minimal at best, but always like toying with different things. It was a comment on the distribution as far as I can tell, given the large screenshot presented in the OP. I don't have anything against Linux per se, I use it on all my servers. It's great, actually. Having sub-par graphical interfaces is "typically Linux" though. I mean, yeah, it's a matter of taste, but I think many would agree that shiny graphics isn't its strong point. And really, a fanboy ego? No reason to throw insults. I use Windows, OS X, iOS, Windows Phone and Linux daily. I suppose the reason for that is that I like certain aspects of each system.
