Unable to move files from OSX to Bootcamp Windows

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

I'm fairly new with OSX, so this might be a simple question for you to solve.

Trying to move some random files om my Macbook between OSX and my second partition, which is Bootcamp Windows 7.

Unfortunately whatever file format I've tried and setting to change, OSX doesn't allow me.

There's no error message, just the cursor icon below indicating it's not possible...

I have no problems moving files the other way around however..

Been trying googling for a solution to no avail.

Out of the box OSX doesn't natively support writing to NTFS file systems, you need a 3rd party application.

Free: NTFS-3G, Fuse4X

Paid: Paragon, MacDrive, Tuxera

BINGO!

I use NTFS-3G on all of my UNIX machines.

This problem sucks :(. I've dealt with it. Here is my advice:

* Avoid writing to NTFS from Mac OS X and to HFS from Windows. There are tools and application that allow you to do that, but there is a reason why Apple ships Mac OS X with read-only NTFS support. My understanding is that MS has not released a white paper on NTFS so all read and write support has basically been reversed engineered. If you write to an NTFS partition from Mac OS X you risk losing data on that partition. Copy data to your NTFS drive from Windows. Copy data to your HFS drive from Mac OS X.

* Backup, backup, and backup.

* I actually gave up on the whole mess and used Dropbox for Windows/Mac syncing on my MBP... seems ridiculous, but it is probably the safest approach.

    • Ridiculous claim that the labor cost difference of $6000 annually would increase cost per phone by $200. The employees produce 3 phones per month or what?
