Redestium
What are your thoughts on it? 0 Fotix
I keep it around, if only for the occassional file that ends up in that file format. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/108059-7zip/#findComment-1257937 Share on other sites
0 Dazzla Veteran Posted October 15, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 15, 2003 I've seen some of the optimized builds of Firebird being distributed in 7zip SFX files and they're insanely small. It seems really impressive to say the least. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/108059-7zip/#findComment-1258104 Share on other sites
0 username
i tried it out because it was free, but went back to shareware nagging winrar because it just works better Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/108059-7zip/#findComment-1258110 Share on other sites
0 123_kid
I use 7-zip instead of Winrar because I like the fact that it is open source, it does what it advertises, and isn't instrusive at all. Just right click on a file and select "extract". Simple, what else do you need in an extraction program? 0 morganpugh84
I use both 7Zip and WinRAR and they are both better than each other depending on what you are compressing. &Zip has potential however it is still in BETA. I have spoken with the developer of WinRAR and he plans to add 7Zip extraction support to WinRAR when 7Zip is finalised but not the creation of 7Zip archives (however this is possible via a module which he might develop if we ask him nicely  ) I still prefer WinRAR as it has more features and its compression levels are excellent. 0 MxxCon
7zip is nice, but i wish author would pull the stick out of his ass and implement better for support for TotalCommander. he's big fan of FAR and refuses to do anything for TC :( Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/108059-7zip/#findComment-1259271 Share on other sites

0 Daybreak
To say something in defense of the aging old ZIP format, its the one format that's everywhere - chances are that down the road 20 years from now, we'll still be using it as the default format... 0 gigatexel
It's a mixed bag in my experience. Sometimes 7zip compresses better than RAR and vice versa so I just keep both installed. 0 siim04
For tight compression I use cab format, for distributing I use zip or make an installer. The trouble with cab is that you can't modify archives after creation - I hope 7zip solves that. 0 Daybreak
Why not? Zip's been around for pretty long, and including PKZIP, its been around for close to 8 to 9 years... It's also the most portable compression format.. most OSes/architectures have some sort of zip utility lying around ... That simply can't be said for any competing format ( 7Zip, RAR, ACE, blah blah blah ) And while it doesn't' really compress VERY well, the tradeoff between size and speed is still amongst one of the best. You wont find many ZIp files on Usenet ;) Also more and more companies are moving to WinRAR because it fully supports creating/extracting ZIP files and it comes with a very powerful SFX creator included in the price (something WinZip doesnt). Also WinRAR has free lifetime updates and has a good price. That is why so many companies are now purchasing it over upgrading WinZip. 0 iwod
I use both 7Zip and WinRAR and they are both better than each other depending on what you are compressing. &Zip has potential however it is still in BETA. That is exactly what i like to see. I think it will be great if WinRAR support extractinf 7zip. It doesn't have to compress them. Extraction would be nice as this means i could have one less program to install. But any news on this yet? 0 Fuzzbling
I needed to compress 2.8Gb on one cd just yesterday. Used 7Zip for that :) Woh! Nice! Yea, 7zip has been my new favorite for a few months now. I don't have WinZip, WinRar or WinACE installed. Felt weird at first, but in time, 7zip did what the others do and better sometimes. Plus, its free. Can't go wrong there. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/108059-7zip/#findComment-2037009 Share on other sites

0 sanctified Veteran Posted April 30, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 30, 2004 IMO doesnt worth the hassle, indeed it compress 10% better than rar but beign 35% slower in compression/decompression, and that is for starters Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/108059-7zip/#findComment-2038588 Share on other sites
