5 Centimeters Per Second at BFI

I had the pleasure of going to see the Anime film "5 Centimeters Per Second" at BFI Southbank in London yesterday. I liked Makoto Shinkai's previous work (Voices Of A Distant Star / The Place Promised In Our Early Days) and he was going to be at the screening - introducing the film, having an interview after the film about his work and what lies ahead.

It's been a while since I went to the BFI Southbank, it's still the same with the wide range of films - last time I went was when doing my A-Level in Film Studies and had to study some Humphrey Bogart films (which were cool) (Y)

Went by the film shop inside the BFI and they had some rare films and books, had quite a collection of Anime there as well - new Appleseed film, Elfen Lied collection, Tekkon Kinkreet to name a few. Listed there was Makoto Shinkai would be signing his artwork and DVD's after the film :woot:

Decided to be a bit lazy in the foyer, where they had some really comfy seating till the screening started at 6PM. Again more comfy seating inside the screening, but they had a no drinking/food policy - which was a bit of a letdown :/

Not going to explain the film, it's one you have to see for yourself I'm afraid - it's that good, animation, story, soundtrack - the whole lot

After it was screened, Makoto Shinkai came up on stage to have an hour long interview about his work, where his future work lies etc .... (including showings of his previous work). A well-mannered guy, came across as being very polite :)

He surprisingly had good English even though he has been in London for a few months but a translator was on hand (and he had trouble keeping up, everyone had a good laugh!). He said he in literal terms that he didn't like Japan and moved here for inspiration, then blurted out "I love London!" in crazy-Japanese style and everyone burst out laughing (including him!)

People in the audience had the chance to ask questions as well. It was a shame to know that the film had been licensed in the UK by ADV but not yet ready for distribution (I was hoping to buy a copy there) :(

After was a trailer of "The Place Promised In Our Early Days" before wrapping it up but letting everyone know he was going to start the signing at the film shop. When I got there the queue was so long it was coming out of the shop and going to the screening door :|

Waited for about 30 minutes, then got a copy of "The Shinkai Collection" on DVD, and got it signed by him. Also took a photo with him as well/shook his hand - which was awesome

All in all, a top day at the BFI. Can't wait for his next project to arrive (Y)

Radish?

Awesome stuff its little over an hour since i got back from London to see "The Girl Who Leapt trough time" all i can say is after seeing this on the Big screen is that i enjoyed it better the second time round but man it sure was a hike coming from Sunderland to London.

Well worth it though, right? :)

There are quite a few funny scenes in that film, the audience were laughing quite a lot when I went to see it - which made it even more enjoyable.

*Me takes note of Capric0rn's request* :p

Radish?

Great film, you're lucky to have met Shinkai, here in Mexico I have way less chances of meeting people like him. Of all his films I like 5cm the most, there are no dimension-warping monoliths or interstellar SMS messaging, just a great story and beautiful artwork :)

    • I like mesh chairs like this, but not being able to lock in the back would make it not work for me. Also, I don't like arm rests at all. Can you not install them and the chair still work? Any recommendations on alternative chairs?
    • As before, my notes are in your quoted section. To be clear, you started posting racist, fascist nonsense. And I always challenge lies and the liars that peddle them. Why? Because the truth matters.
    • Deal for those who want 1900 size electronics in their house? with 2026/7 hardware mhm.. not nice
    • Cheap labour, the same as the U.K. China pays their people pittance.
    • Those people that come over here on boats are already in a safe country, if they want to come over here then do so correctly though the right channels. I was born in the U.K, my family that came over here came so via the proper means. My partner came here via the correct channels, she also became a British citizen, she knows more about this country than most of them that was born here, including myself, she worked hard to do what she does. She will stick up for this country and have done a few times, when people from her own part of world have put the U.K down. We are not going to agree, all I said to start with is that maybe Trump has the right idea with this America first thing and maybe we should start doing the same. Maybe not as drastic as what he is doing, but we do need to sort this country out, we need to sort out tech instead of relying on the U.S and others. Again you have not shown why you are so annoyed that we have left the E.U and this is what it is all about? If you don't live in the U.K and live in the E.U are you annoyed that we left your little club? If you live in the U.K and is pro-E.U, then fair enough then I can see how it annoys you. Are you one of these people who lives in the U.K and have a holiday chalet in the E.U and can now only stay there for so long? If so, then that is bad luck. As I have posted before, I have no problem with people coming here to work, as long as they do if via the proper channels. We are out of the E.U, people voted out, and maybe if more people had voted instead of sitting on their backsides the results would have been different. But they like the E.U and our government thought no we would not vote to leave. How wrong they were, surprised me. I expected to wake up in the morning and hear on the radio that we voted to stay. As I said, we are out and have been for 10 years, we are not going to go back in anytime soon if we ever do, so we all need to make the best of how things are. Anyway, this is supposed to be a tech site.
