Consolidate purchases in Mac App Store and iTunes in new Apple ID

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am currently getting away from Hotmail, as I realize it hasn?t evolved in the last years to include IMAP, and MSN is dead thanks to Facebook.

So I have two Apple IDs : one linked to my old Hotmail address, and one linked to my new iCloud address.

I wish to transfer my purchases from my old account to my new one and delete my old account, for both iTunes and the Mac App Store. I have Apps, music and videos spread on my 3 Macs and my iPhone. Is there any way to do this ? I read that it's an impossible mountain of work for Apple to include a merge account feature, so if they can't do it as they should, I will do it by myself.

Thanks a lot.

PS : I have all the latest software and OSes available.

Apple is not willing to merge Apple IDs at this time. Countless people want to do this but, Apple is flat out saying no. We can only guess the reason. Its either stick with working two Apple IDs or re-buy all your purchases under the new Apple ID. Sorry. =(

Because they can claim that they have more accounts by doing that. More accounts gives them more power with content providers

Yes you can use IMAP with Hotmail... (unofficially)

I recently helped my best friend set it up.

Didn't find the source again, but I'm sure if you invest more than 2 minutes you'll find a solution.

Just in case that Hotmail still is an option to you after that. (Y)

yeah this has been asked a lot by old mobile me users. I have an old username to login on the apple discussion forum, then mobile me acount and then my gmail used to buy apps. Tim Cook clearly said they would have to work on that. I am still waiting

It?s impossible to do ? :|

I?m reading all the comments again and again and I can?t believe it? With all the fiasco with previous Apple IDs, then Mobile Me, then iCloud, and the number of people who registered different accounts for Apple?s forums, Apple?s Dev Center, iTunes and the Mac App Store? there?s no possibility to merge it. I?ve read horrendous stories of people having more than 7 accounts?

I?m glad they said they would address it in the future. But it should have been done the day they released iCloud.

Thanks for the tip Glassed Silver ! But I registered this email address in high school, and it?s somewhat ridiculous :p

With iCloud, I was one of the first registerers, and managed to have [email protected], which is very cool for a common name like mine !

No problem.

Oh, that's sweet... *goes off to spam all common name combinations for that pattern*

It really is ****-poor for any service to tie the username directly to the email address. At least hotmail is free. Imagine if you would have tied your Apple ID to your ISPs email or something you have to pay for in order to keep.

Blah, lousy.

When living with a roommate (lets say his name was Jared Smith), he originally had QWEST DSL service and they gave him a login user id of something like [email protected] to login and pay his bill. When he didn't want to manage it anymore, we called up Qwest and had the service transfered to my name...yet, the login stayed the same [email protected] email. Later we cancelled the service and both moved out of the rented house. I moved to a new place and called qwest for their DSL service. They came and set it up, gave me a piece of paper with my login ID to their website as [email protected]. I called them demanding that they change it, and they said if I wanted it changed I would be charged a disconnection fee and reconnection fee.

From Apple's Knowledge Base:

I no longer have an email address that was also my Apple ID. Can I still use the email address as my Apple ID?

Apple recommends you change your Apple ID to your current, working email address. This will not create another Apple ID, it will only change it to your working email address. See How to change the name you use for your Apple ID if you'd like more information.

Note: @mac.com and @me.com Apple IDs can not be renamed. If you no longer use the .mac or .me email address, be sure to update your Apple ID information with your current, preferred email address

Argh, you got me on the 5th try ! By the way, how do you know that I need pills to make it bigger ? I thought I managed to keep it secret :(

iCloud is also free. I can?t believe people were shelling $100 from their pockets per year to have an email address with just a few additional services prior to iCloud.

From Apple's Knowledge Base:

I was saying to my cousin earlier today that if he had an iCloud account, he also necessarily had a @me email address. Guess I was wrong?

How did you know I had you on the 5th try? :| :p

And YOU just got me... I literally didn't get the play at your spam inbox and thought I really had stated something about pills somewhere in my prior posts in here...

Wow... shows me I get tired and should finally close Neowin and get some La Noire and then go have some sleep.... (Y)

Yupp, that was my biggest gripe with it...

You could get MM for less than that, and especially when I got my iPhone I wanted to reactivate my old .Mac era account for more than just iTunes and App Store et al...

I wanted OTA calendar sync and all that juice.

I was SOOO happy the day iCloud arrived. (Y)

I adore how I always have ALL my contacts with me, no synching worries, no iTunes synchronization. Nothing. (Y)

Before people mention Google Synching and all that: yes, I tried it with calendars... Never again.

Stick to yer ecosystem - you do yourself good!

Sorry to break it to you, but yes, you were wrong! :p

Well, instead of sending one email per email address, you sent only one email with all addresses in the CC field, and I was the 5th address ! :p

Haha !!! Shows we have the same humor? Don?t know if it?s a good or bad thing though

The ending of this game is fabulous ! Even though it seems to always be the same over and over again, there?s some really nice and emotional moments in it.

Ah hell... :D

Yupp, seems we are similar there... Good for us I'd say... (Y)

Cool, can you suggest some good setting and stuff to make the game more intense and have more fun along the way?

I know I can turn off all the lights, use 27" of screen glory on my iMac and have ice tea + chocolate ready...

What more? Too bad I ain't got pizza...

Might make some spring rolls...

I used to invite a few friends so that we could come up to a consensus during the interrogations? they always lead me to wrong answers though !

Definitely turn off all the lights for the ending, even though the final locations are really scary ? You?ll want a bed cover or something to hide from those dark places !

Spring rolls are a must !

I haven't started the game so far, so I'm in the very beginning...

I know I always wanted some hot chocolate with whip cream and cinnamon when I played the winter season in Mafia 2...

Any other suggestions? :)

My Apple ID is my @me address. When I go to the Apple ID website, it gives you the option to add an "alternate email address" and that's it. There isn't any option for telling them "send mail to alternate address", etc. So I'm curious what the "alternate email address" is really for in this case.

    • "...but it may not be Microsoft's fault" seems like a reasonable way to tease what is going on without leaving the user with a false impression that an update is the problem. A title isn't a summery, it is meant to entice the user to read the article. It should not contain a misleading premise; which this title does not. You could maybe complain that the first paragraph should have included that detail. The writing style popularized over 100 years ago in newspapers will cover the most important information as soon as possible with details and nuance added later; the idea being that with each new paragraph you have less of the reader's focus.
    • Samsung Galaxy XR arrives in the UK with new AI and enterprise features by Fiza Ali Samsung is bringing its Galaxy XR headset to the UK several months after the device made its debut as the first headset built on Google's Android XR platform. The headset was first teased in late 2024 alongside Google's introduction of Android XR before making its commercial debut in 2025. Developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, Galaxy XR combines mixed reality experiences with Gemini-powered AI features, allowing users to interact with digital content using voice, gestures, and visual inputs. While the hardware itself remains largely unchanged from the version Samsung unveiled last year, the company is using the UK launch to spotlight several software enhancements that have arrived through recent updates. Among the most notable additions is deeper integration with Google's ecosystem. Galaxy XR users can explore destinations through Google Maps' Immersive View, receiving AI-powered recommendations and contextual information from Gemini while navigating virtual environments. Furthermore, entertainment experiences have also expanded; users can watch 180-degree and 360-degree videos on YouTube, browse spatial content converted into 3D, and ask Gemini questions about on-screen content without interrupting playback. Samsung is also highlighting mixed-reality features such as Circle to Search, which allows users to identify real-world objects through hand gestures while using the headset's video pass-through mode. Another feature automatically converts photos and videos into spatial 3D experiences. Moreover, the headset now also supports Android Enterprise, allowing organisations to manage deployments using existing Android management tools. Annika Bizon, Vice President, Product and Marketing, Mobile Experience, Samsung UK & Ireland, talked about the device, stating: The headset is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform and features dual 4K Micro-OLED displays. The tech giant says that users can expect up to 2.5 hours of battery life. Samsung also confirmed that Galaxy XR will continue receiving software and security updates as the company works alongside Google and Qualcomm to expand the Android XR ecosystem. Galaxy XR is now available for pre-order and will go on sale on 8 July. Customers interested in trying the headset before launch can visit Samsung KX in London and selected Samsung Experience Stores from 17 June. Finally, the company will also host a livestream on 19 June showcasing the headset's capabilities and answering questions from prospective customers.
