winxp Sound is choppy, vid is choppy...what now?

My dell Inspiron E1705 Has been trouble-free until last week. Then , although no ones touched it, It s instantly started being choppy in both sound, and in video, as if was losing its video/graphics card.It stillperforms, But It can't play sound, at least not without sounding "choppy", and video is just as bad.

I've run Malwarebyte, and my antivirus, plus my de frag, though it claimed to be up to date. No joy. Personally, I think

Any idea what it is?

I have no CD's as i got this machine as hand-me-down.

hi there, what codec pack is installed? k-lite has been causing a ton of problems recently, unfortunately, the only way to really get rid of codecs and not cause problems is to reformat.

messing with codecs too much can get reallllly messy.

have you also updated your graphics and sound drivers? if not, please do so.
