In addition to the gameplay that made Halo so popular, the video game franchise also has a pretty solid storyline. But for a while now, the question has been whether or not the franchise can be told through any other medium. Peter Jackson was rumored to be attached to a film trilogy adaptation of the games, but that eventually fell through, and with it did most hopes of seeing Halo onscreen.

But then came the web series 'Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn,' which attracted quite a wide audience and made it clear that an adaptation of Halo was still very possible. Now, it looks like we're getting one. And it's got some pretty good pedigree.

Steven Spielberg is producing a live-action Halo series, he announced today at an Xbox event. The series will be available solely through the Xbox Live's streaming service, it was reported. Beyond that, no one has any inkling what the series will be about. Will it follow Master Chief between the events of Halo 4 and 5? Or will it take the Forward Unto Dawn route and follow new characters entirely?

In any case, it's interesting news, and another sign that Microsoft is very interested in getting into the online streaming industry, which is currently only sparsely populated with Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. It was reported last month that MSN is considering rebooting NBC's cancelled series Heroes for the Xbox console as well.

Spielberg's recent TV credits don't look too shiny -- he was behind failed series The River, Terra Nova, and Smash -- although his other series, TNT's alien invasion drama Falling Skies, is significantly underrated and underwatched.

Looks like there's something else going on with Halo...

 

Production Weekly has a post about an "untitled halo project" and there's a couple tweets relating to it. They were deleted, but Ridley Scott was mentioned in relation to a feature-length digital.

They really need to get going on these. If they're anything like the shorts they'll be pretty epic.

Judging by his recent efforts I'd say that including Spielberg would be a mistake.
