DIMM, SDRAM & Motherboards

Recommended Posts

Hello, i have a reasnoable amount of DIMM ram lying around, and i would like to ues it, trouble is that i've also got a new AGP graphics card, but my current motherboard does not support AGP :( So I will be having to get a new one.

I've been looking on ebay and the odd lettrings the memory is confusing me.

What is SDRAM? is that the sameas DIMM? what's DDR DIMM? which of those is t ? or is it both?

Any help will e much appreciated :D

sooooo......... if get a motherboard that has DDR DIMM socket, will i be able to use DIMM memory? and does what sort of motherboard socket does SDRAM fit into?

you are sooooooo confused..

SDRAM = Type of RAM that is the way the ram acts, all SDR and DDR is SDRAM.

DIMM = Pin configuration and chip configuration on a RAM chip all SDR and DDR are DIMM's.

SDRAM can fit in any P2, P3, P4 Duron, Celeron, Opteron, Athlon, Athlon 64, and Itanium or Itanium 2 motherboards. Even IBM AIX and Solaris Systems Motherboards. SDRAM is the common standard type of RAM these days asside from RDRAM or Rambus which isn't used anymore.

SDR and DDR - Rate Transfers. SDR is Single Data Rate and DDR is Double Data Rate. This explains how many requests a RAM chip makes on 1 clock cycle. a SDR module makes 1, while a DDR modules makes 2.

If you're still confused I suggest you watch this presentation on Memory Basics.

All current desktop PC memory are DIMMs. DIMMs supercede SIMMs, which are the much smaller memory modules used on old OLD motherboards.

SDRAM is rated at PC66, PC100, and PC133, and the motherboard you choose will specify which memory type it takes.

DDR SDRAM is newer SDRAM, and I believe DDR SDRAM starts at 266 MHz (hence the name Double Data Rate).

Anyhow, if you're looking to utilize the memory you have, it would be wise to find out what speed it is rated at, and choose a motherboard that will use that memory as well as the AGP card you have.

My IWILL VX133 Gold (old, laugh all you will) runs my PIII 1GHz processor, up to an AGP 4x video card, and PC133 SDRAM.

Do your research, and come back with specifics. If you want more specific answers, myself or someone here would be glad to help.

hehe. i am cconfused and taking things niiiiiiicccceee and slloooooooowlllllyyyyyy steeepppp by stttteeppppppp. calm down man, i'm only a n00b :D

It's all good man, take your time. And hell.. I only got to where I am today (pre-internet) by breaking everything, learning why it broke, and learning how to fix it. And then the worldwide knowledgebase was born and saved me some money :p

Take your time.

nauge!!!!!!! yaaaaaaaaay! w00t!

this ftuff soooooo confooses me.

trouble is; that memory basics thing is loadsa sound commentary (it would make sense, and the PC i'm on.....has no sound. so ha.

i've seen this moboard on ebay that fits DDR DIMM. does that mean it fits DDR and DIMM, that's basically all i need to know now.

for the 2nd time.. because you choose to ignore me or have an issue with reading what I've typed.
