xdot.tk
A family member asked me for some help in purchasing a gaming rig for their son and I'm afraid I am not up on current hardware, They currently have a pig of a computer that is just not up to the task. It's a single core Intel system by HP from a few years ago and it blows. The kid plays Minecraft, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Skyrim. What would they need to get decent performance on that? They probably don't need the best of the best but I don't want them to have to repeat the last mistake in having to buy a new PC every few years. I currently have an i5 2300 @ 2.8 GHz and it fast enough for me. Then again, when I do game, it's only UT2004. I used to get 16 FPS on a single core P4 and now I am up to 90. It was almost unplayable at 16 FPS. I'm an Intel man so I'd prefer if you kept the suggestions to Intel processors. Thanks

Brandon H Supervisor Posted November 25, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted November 25, 2014 as mind said, what's your budget also are you buying prebuilt/oem or are you custom building it?
xdot.tk
Budget? There anything you can swap over? Lets say around the $500~$1000 mark. I don't think they would want to cannibalize the other computer since it would make it useless with missing parts. They could always use it as a backup in case the new one takes a dumb. as mind said, what's your budget also are you buying prebuilt/oem or are you custom building it? I'm not going to build it but it will use good off the shelf parts. Probably something from iBuyPower. They build custom computers and know what fits with what. The savings are minimal, if anything, having them not do it the last time I checked because they get better deals than a consumer ever could on parts. Brandon H Supervisor Posted November 25, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted November 25, 2014 for your build I would suggest an i5 haswell and a gtx 750ti and 8gb of ram (1600 speed for ram seems to be the most common right now so I suggest that) edit: put something together w/ your iBuyPower site ASUS M51AD http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/ASUS-M51AD/W/241031 Case 1 x ASUS M51AD Case Processor 1 x Intel? Luc2k
Had a crack at iBuyPower but I couldn't finish a build since everything is overpriced and the configuration options are crap for a 1000$ system. I think you might be better off picking parts off Newegg and have them assemble the system.
