Gaming PC build opinions

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I'm looking to build a gaming PC around $1200 (including monitor/OS/etc...) and have the following build in mind: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/YGtyrH

I don't need to play the latest game at maxed settings but I would like it to be capable. It will be mostly used for gaming but will also be my primary computer. Does anyone have any general thoughts or see any problems with the build?

I also have these specific questions:

1.) I'm not planning on overclocking - will the stock CPU cooler be good enough?

2.) I don't want to waste power but at the same time I want to make sure I get a quality, sufficient power supply. PCPartPicker places this build at 307W. Is this power supply too big or just right (to give some extra room)?

Prices look good, psu is a little overpowered if the system is truly 307Watts, but I'd recommend something in that power range anyway if you plan on upgrading at some point (650Watts) also I believe that some psu's don't supply full power when it's not needed (I might be wrong though)

Stock cooling if the case has adequate ventilation, (I'd recommend a coolermaster https://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-case-rc912kkn1 but that's your choice...)

Mine new rig is all air cooled and even though it's an AMD it's air cooled, I've only ever seen temps of 70 Degrees C when gaming on Extreme settings, But seeing as you don't plan on overclocking, you shouldn't need liquid cooling.

Looks fine. If you aren't overclocking then you needn't bother with anything beyond the stock cooler.

If you wait you can probably get windows 10 for free instead of buying 8.1 for $100. You can add that extra money to a beefier gpu.

You've listed a PCI-e Wifi adapter, but the motherboard you've selected also features wifi so you can take that off the list.

Looks fairly good,

I'd really recommend adding an SSD, a Samsung 850 Evo 250GB is $98 on amazon.

If you can get rid of the WiFi card as suggested it's only a $60 increase and I cannot stress how much of a massive performance increase you'll get for that extra $60

Then if you've got some spare cash still you might want to up the GPU a little if you can, an AMD R9 270 maybe...about $50 more but a decent performance bump, and gives your a bit of head room in case you ever get newer games.
