Disappointing week for Firefox...

The creator of the current Firefox default theme has posted that the Firefox devs will stop using his theme in favor of something more "uniform" and "free" across all supported platforms...meaning that they want to keep Firefox from looking too much like IE6 and also to create a "brand identity" that people will "recognize" across all platforms for Firefox and Thunderbird.

The change will occur this week...and will be the default for 0.9. I really hate this. Qute looks so great right now and I really wish they had pursued a better design. I'm sure you guys will agree that other themes will definitely have to be used once this monstrosity comes out in wide release the 12-14th. I am happy to report that Arvid will keep Qute alive for Firefox and will make it available as a theme for download.

UPDATE: TODAY'S 6/07 NIGHTLY BRANCH BUILD NOW HAS THE NEW THEME, AS PICTURED BELOW. TEST AWAY, POST COMMENTS, ETC.

i like them actually, and the do go better with linux. im also using pinstirpe right now in windows and never liked qute that much anyway.

i think they both look good, and you will be able to use either one so it doesnt matter

If that image you attached is the new default theme then it sucks, but the "old" default theme sucked too. It doesn't matter to me because as soon as I installed Firebird and Firefox I change the theme anyway.

Do they? It is open source, couldn't Qute still live on as the default in unofficial builds?

You JUST said on the Moz forums that "that theme is not good at all." Sure I understand that too, but they need something better looking. Oh well, theme time for me. Hope somebody makes some good ones out there when 1.0 goes hot.

Yes, it does look bad, but it's being blown way out of proportion. It's not like Qute won't be available for use.

Mav: Since 0.8, they have tried to secure the liscencing rights to everything they use. Qute was a 3rd party theme that could have, if the author wished, been turned into closed theme that needed to be paid for. This is simply a step towards them making sure they own the rights to every part of their browser.

Seriously, who thought that the XP 'luna' theme was good? But you know what? It's didn't matter because you can customize it. (well u had to replace uxtheme.dll) Same with firefox, in just a matter of a few clicks, you can change the theme.

This looks like a combination of Bluecurve, Pinstripe, and old Win95 style icons. It's awful compared to Qute. At least Qute will still be available for those who want it.

possibly. but mostl ikely not. i think ffox development has begun to level off so ther arent these huge drastic changes anymore.

Actually looks pretty good, I don't see any reason to complain. And changing the theme should help if you don't like that theme, what's the big problem? :p

That if the new default theme doesn't look well with the most popular OS or is not as good as the current one, the users that the Mozilla F. marketing team wants to attract won't be as impressed. That is :). And they don't care about optional themes ;)
