Ars Technica Review: Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5GHz

Some of you may have already read it, overall it's quite good, but taking into account that they reviewed a dual 2.5GHz machine with water cooling, I'm surprised about this:

75-80?C under normal usage

It runs at that temp normal with water cooling? can someone with water cooled G5 confirm?

i heard that they only got the chip to 2.5gHz because it is actually overclocked. hence the water cooling.

i don't have one, but i wouldn't be surprised if it gets pretty toasty. what's it matter how hot it gets? the whole design of the g5 was to make it quiet. very quiet.

thats still pretty freaking hot... which apple made even hotter b/c they shrinked the die, just like what intel did with prescott

Wow 75-80C. I wonder how hot that thing would make my room. I guess that G5's can handle more heat under regular usage than p4s or a64s.

I have my G5 running all the time, and haven't noticed the 'heat increase' like i did when i had a PC running (...in my room) maybe because its properly designed airflow wise, as opposed to most people's custom jobs...?

probably.

when you think about it... most people push 50cfm through their computers to keep the cpu alone at 40C. the g5 was designed to push MUCH less (though i can't give any definite number), so even if the cpu is twice as hot, you're only pushing 1/4 the air, and it ends up being less.
