Based on: http://cristi.100free.com/e-mail.htm [source for this link: emailaddresses.com forum post]

1. Go to http://cn.mail.yahoo.com/.

2. Click on the blue button

3. Enter your desired username and press the button at the bottom. If the username is already taken, you will see text in red at the top. Keep trying until you come up w/ one that's not already taken.

4. Follow the pic

A: Check the available options here.

B: Enter any zip code from this page.

Click the button at the bottom.

5. You should be taken to a page having two buttons to choose from. Click the right one (that has 1000M on it). [in my case, I got a page where I had to enter my chosen password twice and the image verification code again, am guessing it was so since I haven't clicked on the button in the earlier step for a long time as I was taking screenshot and adding text on the pic]

6. Log in to yahoo messenger using your newly created yahoo id and add one of your friends who's currently online to your friends list. Make sure he/she adds you as well and exchange a message or two.

7. http://cn.mail.yahoo.com/event/mail_1g/1gb_06.htm should have popped up already. If not, go there. Click on the bottom yellow button that has 1G on it. You should see:

100to1000.jpg

If you don't get the page w/ the above pic and are using Opera, switch to IE to continue (only till the end of this tutorial). I haven't tested in Firefox.

8. You now have a 1 GB yahoo inbox, but it's in chinese. To set the language to english:

a. Log in to your account at http://mail.yahoo.com. Click on Options (It's to the right below your account name)

b. Click on the last link at the left to edit your profile. Enter your password to continue.

c. Click on the first of two 'Edit' buttons.

d. Click on the link at the bottom (see the screenshot below):

e. Choose the 1st one in the drop down menu. Press the first button.

f. Press 'I Accept'. Click 'Finished'.

g. Log out and log back in.

9. For POP3 access:

a. Click 'Mail Options' at the top right.

b. Under 'Management', click on 'POP Access and Forwarding'.

c. Review the options, click on 'POP Settings' and press 'Save'.

Now you should be able to use your mail client and access this account. (I tried in MS outlook 2003, was about to send messages fine, but not retrieve. I am not sure if this is the case w/ just me or everyone else.)

:)

Hrmm, I just want a 1GB mail account with POP3 access damnit!!

Did you try checking if POP3 is working w/ your Yahoo! .cn account (assuming you signed up)?

BTW, you have http://spymac.com offering 1 GB account w/ POP3.

    • It is silly there is no simple way to check whether this profile has been activated. CFRs are normal, but trying to even hide the fact if it's on / off seems silly, especially for something so user-facing. Surely Microsoft is "proud" of their engineering efforts on this one and ought to display it somwhere in the GUI.
    • Many Linux distros are not known for excellent battery life, so I'm not sure that is the best example. A more apt example may be Apple, but Apple's CPUs are simply far more efficient than Intel & AMD at single-threaded tasks like these, so "boosting" is not as power-hungry and less heat-inducing. Not to mention Apple will hardly engage P-cores for basic UI tasks; they use a pretty complicated QoS scheme to only activate P-cores for more serious workloads like HTML / JS execution or decompression or application launch. Microsoft is (smartly) doing it for launch, but also for UI tasks, which is the more nonsensical part: why ... do Windows 11's UIs need modern CPUs to boost? It should load so quickly that there's not even time for the CPU to boost.
    • I've not seen any controlled testing and, judging by Microsoft's mentality, within a year, they'll have added so much more bloat, it'll undo any perceptible latency benefit and we'll have boosted the CPU clocks for nothing.
    • It depends: heat soak is a thing. Initially on cold boot-up, the heatsinks & heatpipes are at ambient temp. After heatsinks & heatpipes warm up (through normal usage), they don't immediately cool to ambient temp when the load goes away. So their baseline is higher and the trigger point for fans is much less stress. Add a few more CPU spikes → it's too hot to stay at the same fan RPM → fans get triggered to start up up much sooner / get triggered to ramp much more quickly.
    • Can LibreOffice just shut up and worry about themselves and stop comparing themselves? Do we see Microsoft complaining about euro office?
