The Curse of the Hatian Peanut Vendor

Recommended Posts

"In case you're scared that the Packers might be "on a mission" because of the whole Brett Favre situation, you might want to find out what a loaf of bread and a gallon of gas cost the last time Green Bay won in Philadelphia - because it was in 1962!

But more than mere history is involved: According to the legend, in the 1962 game, the Packers were ahead 42-0 and scored a TD with few seconds left to make the final score 49-0. A Haitian immigrant concessionaire happened to be working the game, and he put a voodoo curse on the Packers, the terms of the curse being that the Packers would never again win a game in Philadelphia.

Not only have the Packers not won here since then, but several events that have taken place in their six subsequent visits would tend to confirm the existence of something supernatural being responsible:

1974: A 6-5 Packers team came to Philly as a 7 1/2-point favorite to beat a 4-7 Eagles team that had lost six in a row. In a game played under near-monsoon conditions, with heavy rain and gale-force winds, Green Bay fumbled seven times in the first half and lost 36-14; the Packers would not win again that season and finished 6-8 while the Eagles didn't lose again and finished 7-7.

1978: Packers punter David Beverly missed the ball on a punt, his foot never striking the ball, leading to a turnover. Green Bay nearly tripled the Eagles' total yardage output but lost 10-3. The Packers, 7-2 entering the game, would finish 8-7-1 and miss the playoffs; the Eagles, 4-5 going in, would finish 9-7 and earn an NFC wild-card berth, their first of four consecutive playoff appearances under Dick Vermeil.

1990: Backup Anthony Dilweg had to quarterback the Packers because Don Majkowski, the starter, was in a Philadelphia hospital suffering from Moldavian food poisoning, a rare (and frequently fatal) viral infection that, according to the Philadelphia Department of Health, had not been reported in the city since 1905. The Packers lost 31-0.

1994: Reggie White makes his first return to the Vet as an ex-Eagle, and the Packers lost 13-7 in a week where all 28 NFL teams wore special "throwback" uniforms in observance of the league's 75th anniversary.

1997: As Ryan Longwell lines up for a game-winning 28-yard field goal attempt, a downpour begins. The kick is up ..... NO GOOOOD! Eagles win 10-9, the storm dissapearing soon after - and Longwell has not missed a single FG from less than 35 yards out since.

So you see? Calm down - there's nothing to get worked up over! "

Addendum 2003: In a NFC Divisional playoff marked by speculation of divine mandate due to the loss of Brett Favre's father a month previous, the Packers saw a 14 point lead shrink to 3 but had the Eagles in a 4th-and-26 deep in their own territory with 1:12 left. Donovan McNabb threw a 27 yard pass to Freddie Mitchell and the Eagles went on to kick the field goal to secure overtime. Brett Favre threw a fly ball pass in OT that was intercepted by Brian Dawkins and returned to Green Bay's 35, setting up the winning field goal. Several Packers defenders had forgotten the rule against consecutive timeouts and spent the kick trying to stop the clock again."

From a messageboard I frequent. Thought it was interesting.

:shifty:

    • I agree when are you going to read this (really poor BTW) article? Here is a better article so you actually know what is going on and answers questions you had in other comments --> https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/05/speed-boosting-low-latency-profile-is-one-of-the-improvements-coming-to-windows-11/ It is unclear if one will be able to disable the new profile at this point but I am not seeing any reason why one would.
    • I disagree; they come off very "bitchy" and "whiny". Make a great product and combine that with a great price (free) and people will come over to your side. Or build it and they will come as they say. Constantly trying to get attention by complaining all the time, will turn people off to your product.
    • It use to be a nightmare, with LibreOffice supporting a newer draft ODF standard by default, and Microsoft Office supporting the older non-draft standard. Now that they both support the same version of ODF, they should be interoperable.

    • Hi. As the title suggests, I can't access the forum on my phone. I'm using Edge on Android and when I try to navigate to the forum I get a "we value your privacy" popup and none of the buttons are clickable. It effectively stonewalls me from reading any forum content.
