To buy: LGA 775 or Socket 478?

Recommended Posts

I am going to upgrade the XP Box in my sig with either of the following two sets of motherboard/CPU. Which one would be the best buy (prices from Newegg)?

Option 1

ASUS P5P800 865PE ($94.50)

P4 540 3.2 GHz, LGA 775, 800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache, HT ($219.00)

Total: $313.50

Option 2

ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe ($179.50)

P4 3.2E GHz, Socket 478, 800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache, HT ($219.50)

Total: $399

Edit: I need to be able to keep my current memory. Suggest alternates like AMD-64 if you want, but I have never bought AMD so I know nothing about chipsets or good motherboards. I would like to stay in the $300-$400 price range.

Obviously, Option 1 is less expensive, but is the P4C800-E worth it? Or should I get Option 1 because it is more forward compatible for near-future upgrades? I forsee myself getting a PCI-Express video card within a year, so that is why I was thinking about going with LGA 775 since right now it seems like only motherboards supporting that socket include PCI-E. What do you think? Thanks!

because you have to buy ddr2 memory and a pci-x gfx card also if you go for s775 :p

Actually the P5P800 is LGA 775, supports DDR400, and has an AGP slot. Thus, it is sort of a stepping-stone from my DDR400/AGP system to a DDR2/PCI-E system.

Considering your CPU choice, I'd strongly recommend the P4C800-E Deluxe. It is a quality board that has been the favorite among almost every serious PC enthusiast. By the way, I'd also recommend a Northwood CPU versus a Prescott unless you're getting a 3.6E or higher. My 3.0C outperforms the 3.2E in most benchmark categories when both are running at stock speeds. Advantages of a Northwood are cooler temps, better overclocking w/ stock hsf, and better for gaming.

s775 no pci-x and ddr2?

Yes, early Socket 775 was DDR 400, and AGP, then DDR 400 and PCIe, then the DDR2 I know and hate.

Seriously though, I'd recommend the Socket 775, it's newer technology and Socket 478 Prescotts are just as hot as Socket 775, and teh new cooler is teh "****"

If you must go Intel, I'd get the LGA. Its going to have future compatibility while the 478(or whatever) is going to fade out. I still recommend going the AMD route.

Ok (and I'll put this in the original post), I have never bought AMD and don't know much about it, but I would be interested in hearing about similar-priced AMD setups. So, what would you suggest?

What kind of ram do you have? What's your spending limit? With that info I can have it done after I eat(which will take like an hour cuz the dining hall is probly packed).

I have PC3200 RAM (generic :() and want to spend $300-$400 (college budget). Thanks!

I would go with a 478 processor. However why do u need the ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe board? If you aren't gonna use Raid get a different board like the p4p800se (It uses DDR400 and AGP8X). Also the 865pe chipset is exactly like the 875 pretty much. ;)

I think you guys are all wrong here.

Maybe some of you don't know this but....

The P5P800 is the i865PE Chipset with an LGA775 Socket. :D

It uses DDR400, AGP8X and has No PCI-e.

It's a hot board if you don't need PCI-Express and want the latest Intel Processor.

I think it makes sense to get the P5P800 if you want to get a E0 Stepping Prescott (EJ).

Thanks Steven. That was my thought exactly. I don't use RAID, but have heard so many good things about the PCP800-E that I wanted to consider it. Also, the P5P800 makes sense because if I do upgrade to a PCI-E video card then I don't want to have to ditch an expensive MB for the upgrade.

For those who are saying go with ddr2, its not worth it yet.

Much more expensive than ddr1 and not much difference since speeds are not that far ahead of ddr1.

Wait til ddr2 800mhz comes out atleast :)

Very True.

I would recommend this setup for anyone who wants an LGA775 CPU and still has a fast AGP8X Video card they still want to use.

As for The Processor hang on a while, and wait for the EJ's to appear. They're really a lot better than the E's.

The P5P800 has a 24 pin power connector. So I recommend you get a new PSU.

The Antec Neopower.

    • Euro-Office must default to ODF to be considered "genuinely European", LibreOffice argues by David Uzondu Euro-Office is a web-based collaborative office suite that positions itself as a "European sovereign alternative" to American tech companies, backed by a coalition of developers including Nextcloud, IONOS, Abilian, BTactic, OpenProject, and, more recently, Tuta. The project officially went live a couple of days ago, but not before drawing heavy fire from LibreOffice developers, who called the marketing claim that Euro-Office represents the "first open-source office suite developed in Europe" a deceptive historical inaccuracy because projects like OpenOffice and LibreOffice existed decades earlier. Now that the project has launched, LibreOffice is back with another complaint, arguing that Euro-Office cannot consider itself "genuinely European" while it pushes proprietary Microsoft defaults on users. Euro-Office had promised to improve the OpenDocument Format (ODF) back in April, but the current release still plagues users with several technical failures. For instance, the suite lacks an admin setting to enforce ODF, and mobile editors completely block ODF saves, forcing files into Microsoft's OOXML formats. Some configurations force files into read-only mode, while editing frequently corrupts document formatting or erases data. LibreOffice thinks that merely supporting a format as an afterthought does not make you a sovereign alternative, as file formats are the battleground where" digital sovereignty is won or lost." The road to the first stable release of Euro-Office has been quite bumpy due to an aggressive public fallout with OnlyOffice, from which the coalition originally forked the project. OnlyOffice struck back by accusing the coalition of violating copyright terms under its AGPLv3 branding requirements by stripping the original branding anyway and forking the code. Getting Euro-Office up and running is a bit wonky (at least for non-technical users), as there is no direct installer to grab off the web. The easiest way we learnt is by using Docker. First, pull the official Euro-Office image from the GitHub Container Registry: docker pull ghcr.io/euro-office/documentserver:latest Then, run the container with active ports and a secure JWT token, enabling the test environment: docker run -i -t -d -p 8080:80 --restart=always -e EXAMPLE_ENABLED=true -e JWT_SECRET=my_secure_jwt_secret ghcr.io/euro-office/documentserver:latest And finally, open a web browser and go to the following address: http://localhost:8080 If you are running this on a remote server, replace localhost with your server's IP address. You will see the Euro-Office test page, where you can create new text documents, spreadsheets, or presentations directly in the browser. Image via Euro-Office Nextcloud promises that proper standalone desktop versions and mobile apps will arrive in a future release.
