What you should do with new computers is just format them and install your own copy of Win98/2k/XP/whatever because with all the junk they put in, norton is the least of your worries.

He is right, all of it slows down the computer a lot. Norton is probably one of the worst though.

Think I am going to format at the weekend, in the meantime I have managed to scrap all the junk and am atm scrapping Norton.

The startup list is clean and services, registry etc have also all been cleaned.....

This should make it a bit faster right?

Right, my new laptop came with Norton internet systemworks pre-installed, if it slows it down then it can be ripped out and replaced.....

Does it significantly slow the pc down? If so how much?

thanks in advance

I don't know about slowing it down, I use mcafee only. It does everything for me.

If you use Norton products you might want to read this:Flaws in Norton Products.

wtf?

Norton is Symantec      :o

That's what I was thinking...

I used to have norton too on my PC untill like 4y ago I tried other software. All I can say is that Norton realy slows down your system. Now I'm using AVG antivirus. Free, does what it has to do and doesn't slow my PC down.

But if you have a PC that came with all the softw pre-installed then there are most likely other programs that are slowing it down. They always put a lot of crap on it that you don't need.

Scrap norton and go for symantec

We now know the difference!!!???

From experience, norton is an ABSOLUTE pain to remove, you may not be able to succesfully without a format/clean-install

Why is it so hard to remove? This must be the worst bit of advice I've ever heard! It is as easy to remove Norton as any other program!

Symantec is nearly as bad as Norton. Its less bloated, with an uglier interface.. but still too bloated.

I like NOD32.

    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
