Education discount in Apple Store? [UK]

Recommended Posts

Hi guys..

Just curious to know. The 2nd proper UK Apple Store opens in the Birmingham Bullring towards the end of this week.. woohoo! I keep thinking about getting a Mac Mini, and i'd much prefer to just go to a store and buy it rather than mail order it, have to be home for the delivery, risk it being broken or damaged, etc etc etc!

So i'm thinking I might go up to the bullring at some point and get one.. but I work for one of the biggest universities in the UK and I believe i'm entitled to educational discount as a result.. so I wanna know, if I walk into the store with my staff ID card from the university, will that entitle me to the education discount in the store?

Cheers.

Thinking about it now it may be different in the UK

Well.. sorry to bump this old thread, but better than starting a new one.

Finally went in there today to pick up Tiger and a new keyboard for my recently purchased 2nd hand G4 800MHz.. well on the downside, you can't get education discount on software in the UK stores.. can only get that online.. BUT you can get it on hardware, AND my staff card was good for the discount despite it having 'non-academic' printed on it.. so wootang.. Apple Pro Keyboard cost ?17.30 instead of ?1;);)

Ordered Tiger online just now at the reduced price of ?58 instead of ?80':)h :)

Quite significant discounts IMHO..

Entry level powerbook will drop from ?1,049 to ?902, right up to a saving of nearly ?300 on the top end one.. UK retail price on that is ?1,849 and education price is ?1,589.

As I say, I think its quite generous.

Well I don't think they make huge amounts of money on the Mini's if the discounts are anything to go by..

Entry level one retail price is ?359 - education discount knocks that down to ?337.23.. and top level retail price is ?499 - education price for that is ?468.83 - so not particularly special pricing on that, but still better than nothing:); :)

Um.. I don't see how you would get an extra discount with an NUS card. You go online, you specify which educational establishment you are affiliated with, and they present you with the discounts. They basically ask whether you are a student or teaching member of staff at the establishments before you actually go into the store with the discount prices.

Are you sure you're not referring to the prices of the first release of the Mac Mini? They revised the specs but bumped the prices recently..

they bumped the price?

there is DEFINATELY the price decrease with an nus card.

try www.nusonline.co.uk ( may have to register to access the NUS store though )

i didnt update my nus card for this year ( my new/old college didnt have it available, i still got my old blue one for 2003/04 ). so i'm waiting to get a brand new one off my new university then maybe ordering a new powerbook or imac or something

http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/Uk...stom?qprm=51287

That links gets directly into the NUS Higher Education store, which is cheaper still than the normal Apple Education Store. I got my new top model Mac mini for ?448 instead of ?499 - not huge savings, but still pretty good, and I saved about ?300 on my PowerBook 12" a year ag:) :)

Nick

Wow.. well, I didn't know that. I'm humble enough to accept when i'm wrong :)

Wonder if I can order stuff on that link.. my sister is an NUS card holder.. student scumbag ;)

    • Visual Studio finally gets long-awaited feature that developers will love by Usama Jawad Visual Studio Code is Microsoft's popular, lightweight, open-source code editor, it is actually Visual Studio that is the company's flagship integrated development environment (IDE). Although the IDE already offers a boatload of useful features for developers, Microsoft has finally introduced a long-requested capability that will be loved by many. While developers have already been able to create Git pull requests (PRs) directly within Visual Studio for the past couple of years, it had not been possible to review a PR without switching to the browser, until now. Microsoft revealed in December 2025 that it is working on UX that enables developers to do just that, and fast-forward to June 2026, and Visual Studio finally has native capabilities to open and inspect a PR, discuss feedback, and wrap up the review, all without switching to the browser. This integration works for both GitHub and Azure DevOps (including on-prem). Developers have access to multiple surfaces to open a PR, including Git Repository, Git Changes, and the Git menu in Visual Studio. Once you open a PR, all the important details will be immediately visible to you, from where you can navigate to various levels of granularity and branch states, depending on the reviews that you are engaged in. As you would expect, you also get a diff view that enables you to see code changes inline or side-by-side in a separate panel. You can also review commit-by-commit. Additionally, this UX fosters collaboration as you can leave comments, reply to threads, and resolve conversations easily. Naturally, you can also leverage Copilot to apply a code suggestion to fix a potential issue. When you are done, you have the ability to approve, complete, and merge the PR. This is a pretty major feature as it has been requested heavily for the past few years. You can try it out in Visual Studio 2026 version 18.7, made available here recently. Microsoft plans to enhance this experience further in future releases with comment filtering, a timeline of PR activity, and more.

    • Around 68% of developers are now using AI to generate code during development, and some experts are saying that a single developer using AI tools can now do the work of an entire team of 4 to 5 engineers.  According to Figma's State of the Designer 2026 report, 72% of designers now use generative AI in their workflows and 91% say it improves the quality of their work, not just their speed.  But does this mean web developers and designers are becoming less relevant, or are they simply evolving into a different kind of role? Would love to hear from developers and designers here has AI made your job easier, or do you feel threatened by how fast these tools are improving
