Squeaking Brakes, Advice Requested

Recommended Posts

Basically, just wanted a few people's advice, got an 18 month old Peugeot 206, and have recently noticed when it's been damp the brakes will squeak a little when first applied above about 20 mph for about 10-15 mins after starting up, not really sure if it's safe, so have been driving something else in the meantime (not messing around if the brakes are faulty).

Wondered if some people could give me some advice about what it could be, if it's safe? Could it be a case of wear on the pads? or something less serious?

Thanks in advance guys

You should probably have your brakes looked at to be sure, but it is probably not a safety concern. It's usually just an annoyance. Very common with disc brakes. Some brand new cars even do it. Squealing is caused by a high frequency vibration between the pads and the rotors (or discs). The technician can take steps to reduce or eliminate the vibration. Probably not a safety issue.

LOL!!!!!

You guys are funny.

Think about this.... It happens right after its wet and goes away..

Water and iron rotors...

The the rotor surface will rust slightly and imbed a bit of rust into the pad surface on the first application , while wiping the rotor clean. The squeel / squeak you hear is simply the rust on the pad surface scraping on the rotor.

This is COMPLETELY normal , and WILL NOT effect saftey in ANY manner.

IF it were to do it ALL the time, its time to have them looked at.

THe HAWK HP+ pads I use on my cobra, squeel badly all the time. And its completely normal.

My high dollar Brembo rotors will have some within 15 min , if I shoot em with the hose. But only when cold, if they are even warm they will dry too quickly.

Let alone let them sit out overnight or so in rain or whatever, depends on where you live. When I lived on the coast of San Diego the salt air was incredible what it would do to things in a very short time.

I am an automechanic-electronics specialist at Kanata Ford-Ford Dealership- in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This noise is normal when pads are cold and/or wet. It is due to the metallic content-and, recently, nonasbestos composition, incorporated in modern brake materials. The noise goes away after applying the brakes a number of times because this warms and dries the material, and the rotor/drum surfaces, out. Follow the manufacture's maintenance intervals. Oh, and remember, nobody knows your vehicle like the manufacturer-at least in Canada. Further, at least here, I've found the aftermarket parts to be of mostly lower quality than OEM-especially in electronics; sensors, solenoids etc.

    • I'm not aware of this issue, but to help the other guys.  What version of Android are you using? Did you try a different browser? To see if Edge is the issue here.
    • I agree when are you going to read this (really poor BTW) article? Here is a better article so you actually know what is going on and answers questions you had in other comments --> https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/05/speed-boosting-low-latency-profile-is-one-of-the-improvements-coming-to-windows-11/ It is unclear if one will be able to disable the new profile at this point but I am not seeing any reason why one would.
    • I disagree; they come off very "bitchy" and "whiny". Make a great product and combine that with a great price (free) and people will come over to your side. Or build it and they will come as they say. Constantly trying to get attention by complaining all the time, will turn people off to your product.
    • It use to be a nightmare, with LibreOffice supporting a newer draft ODF standard by default, and Microsoft Office supporting the older non-draft standard. Now that they both support the same version of ODF, they should be interoperable.
